Front exhaust issue

Hi I have a 2006 is250 I had the exhaust system replaced  with stainless steel years ago  , thought it had all been done until the dreaded vsc, engine light and traction control lights kept coming on + p0420 code, on getting it jacked up only rear been replaced after the cat to the end , turns out got a nice size hole right next to o2 sensor , had to bandage for now but looking for best way to repair or is it better to get a whole new front section ? ( exhaust will probably be worth than car then ) can it be pieced with this type of fitting in photo or am I looking at another £300+ on top of what the rear cost? Please  bear in my mind I’m female and when I have rung around a few exhaust places they’ve tried to completely lift my leg   😂 so would just like to get another opinion from someone who might’ve had same issue

Hi Eileen and welcome to the LOC.

From looking at the picture the crack is significant and given the rust finding clean metal to weld a plate on is not going to be easy. The clamp may work with some additional exhaust sealing paste but again if the pipe it is being clamped to is also weak the clamps may either crush it or cause further fractures.

Unfortunately as with all other Lexus models there are no aftermarket options for this section of exhaust and as you mention the price is ridiculous.

If you could find a local independent garage with decent welding and fabrication skills it may be your best and cheapest option.

I seem to remember there may be one in Leeds, Tony Banks can anyone confirm?

Thanks Steve , I feared it would be beyond repair, my dad is a welder he  can weld from steel to alluminium and all sorts but he’s riddled with arthritis and I can’t ask him to crawl underneath it. . Well it looks like my nhs backpay at end of the month is going on a new one. One place quoted me £1000 + for it I’ve given the guy you recommend an email or think the eBay option will be the way to go . Appreciate your help thanks !

Repair should be significantly cheaper, depending on how far you want to go. Looking at the pick it seems the section from flange, probably all the way to secondary cats is beyond repair (especially those parts under the heatshields likes to rot). Depends where you go and what you ask for it probably can be fixed as cheap as £280, that is what local exhaust repair shot to me would quote, it would be £100x2 for two pipes, going from flange to secondary car and £40x2 for two bungs for o2 sensor. I don't know why, but nobody wants to fix those flanges, so there options are quite limited, simplest solution is just to weld the pipe there (in which case it would be included in the price of pipe being replaced), or it will probably going to be another £100x2 to replace 2 flanges. Sadly it seems you exhaust is beyond just patching it, the location and size of he hole indicates it is quite badly rotten, so some amount of new piping will be needed.

Realistic price for this repair should not exceed £500. Even if they replace whole middle section. then the only question is whenever you replaced rear cats or not, they are not needed legally nor for emissions, so kind of optional. But if you were to replace rear cats, then they add like £120x2 to the price. And that is what makes mid-section price to ~£700.

Now gain - if you repair is coming close to £500, then perhaps it would be time to consider replacing whole middle section with matching stainless steel part and forget about it. Tony banks as recommended by Steve are good, the only problem is that you need to go in person to them in Leeds, but they should do middle section for £700 from either aluminised steel or stainless (that is what I was quoted a year ago, not sure if prices crept-up with the rest of inflation).

Thanks Linas , I have emailed the guy in Leeds for a quote to replace , I think if one sides rotten then the other can’t be far behind so looking probably like just replacing it, at least I know why all warning lights kept popping up now 😂

100% - not worth the effort to fix just one side. Once you there you may as well get both sides done, not much more work, but then you can be sure it will be good for many years.
