Backbox Silencer Replacement

Recommended Posts

You can't have one side, because it is Y-section in the rear. So it will always be 2 sides.

I have like 3 sets of them, but I am not sure if any of them would be much better than yours... except the one that is still on my daily... Unless... maybe you can cut-it up and use to patch yours.

That said - welding is solution, just a temporary one. Depending on how bad it is... it may last a year, but if it is very thing then after few months it will rust right next to the weld.

You reckon the one in that eBay listing looks good. I see some silencers in 3 separate pieces not joined like you said. But that cost £350.

I just hope it is silent like it was before.

The one you linked is not great, pipes are thin and crushed, the Y-joint looks shaite, probably massive restriction and water catch... meaning it will rust there.

Now original exhaust is not amazing either, but there is minimal level of quality that seems to last over 10 years... the one you copied probably will be gone in 3 years.

I think Tony Banks does decent job on aftermarket exhaust, the problem is that you need to go to them in Leeds, despite them selling the exhaust on eBay - basically, they advertise on eBay, actually requires you to go in person and they custom make it in a day. But the quality exceeds that of factory and you can also go for SS as an option.

I think I would pay the extra for that £350 one. Looks like it's probably better quality and it ought to fit better too since the 3 pieces will offer a bigger range of adjustment.

I'm pretty sure the cheaper one posted earlier has really small tailpipes, which make the cutouts in the bumper look cavernous. I seen an IS250 the other day with what looked like one of these £250 exhausts, and it frankly, looked stupid, and cheapened the appearance of the car.

The one for £350 looks better, but damn those welds are ugly...

In short, not as horrible as first one, but overall still quite horrible looking exhaust, with weld that would get most of welders fired from the job.

Now sure - there is point, where improvements are marginal, if it does the job, doesn't leak, doesn't rust, does not create obstruction in exhaust... who cares that it is ugly, it stays under the car and directs some gas out. Perhaps it doesn't need to be beautiful and paying £900 just to have shiny exhaust which is never going to be seen again apart that one time it is taken out of the box is kind of waste. But also - making pattern exhaust for specific model is not hard, the pipe and hangers there are worth £20, it takes maybe 1 hour to weld it together. Remember - nothing needs measuring here, they making it from pattern. So let's say labour £100. The back boxes they buy factory made for probably £50 each. So realistically a nice exhaust has about £220 worth of material in it. Some profit to be made there... sure... but £350 should really buy you a decent looking exhaust, which fits exactly and doesn't look horrible. Whereas now what is being sold looks more like me practicing to weld for first time.

Honestly - if you buy a welder, some pipe and say "look guys, that was my first attempt, how does it look"... I would say "great mate, for the first time doing it you have nailed it, it not most beautiful thing in in the world, but it is functional, you gained new skill and it is cool". But to a business selling this as a "professionally" made product... I would be embarrassed.
