UX Driveshaft Failure…

So, the cause of all my new UX ownership woes can finally be revealed…..the driveshaft has failed…after 20K miles. The dealer kindly rang me earlier and broke the good news…good in the fact I now know the cause. They have to order a new one direct from Japan, which will take another 3 weeks or so….so I’m stuck with a year old 250h F Sport courtesy car in the meantime😉once my car goes like the courtesy car, I will be happy🙂🙂🙂🙂

Not heard of a driveshaft going for donkeys years let alone on one 4 years old.

Yes, I was mightily surprised. The 1 year old/10,000 mile F Sport I have as a courtesy car goes like it’s in a different league….mine should be the same of course. The dealer chief tech said he was surprised I got mine to them in one piece under the circumstances……a Lexus with a failing driveshaft doesn’t behave too well let me tell you🤔🙄🙄. I’ve asked them to double check, in due course, I’ve not caused it any further damage by driving it up to them.

If you didn’t get it new, who knows what could have caused it. Maybe it’s had an impact or somebody’s jacked under it. Depends how it’s failed of course.

Yes….I did ask the aftersales manager if mine’s had accident repairs…no real response as yet, but I will follow up on probable causes…which may be that it was just a bad driveshaft🤔as they did tell me it was leaking oil..

I’m a mechanic by trade and we have a saying “somebody’s been here” and if it’s leaking from either end then there’s a story. The thing is Paul, if a new drive shaft cures it you don’t really need to know what caused it.

A good point Don - but I'm the curious type...if there's no real answer, and - as I say - if it was a bad one...then fine....just so long as when I get it back, I don't get other cars shooting past me up hills on the A30 at 70 whilst I'm struggling at 50😆

Which side driveshaft has failed?

A short production run of 2 litre hybrid C-HR manufactured during January 2020 had a recall issued due to right hand driveshaft failure & I've seen a report of one C-HR suffering from this drive shaft failure.

The driveshaft was at risk of failure during high torque applications OR rapid acceleration.

I don't know yet Lee, but I swear that one violent judder, on the road up to the dealers the other day, came from the direction of the front/offside/right hand side (on the driver's right as he (or she) looks to the front. When I get that info, I'll post it here.

They've ordered both..to be on the safe side. Whether they'll fit both to my car is another question....

Is there a valid reason why they can’t have the replacement parts flown over from Japan ?

Not sure it’s ethical for you to have to wait 3 weeks 🤔

It was explained to me by the aftersales manager...something to do with priorities and the various gradings of such orders....a bit surprised UX driveshafts had to be ordered from Japan..meaning there isn't a ready supply in the UK somewhere..but hey ho...we shall see. I must assume all such orders from Japan for Lexus genuine parts are all flown over? As long as my own car goes like it should once it's sorted, I'll be happy. As I've said elsewhere, a bit of a horrendous start to Lexus UX ownership...best it gets better once I get mine back all ready to go😉

They must be being flown over - you don't get container shipments from Japan to the UK in 3 weeks, especially as most shipments aren't going through Suez.

I imagine there is a slight delay in sourcing the part and/or waiting for a plane full of orders before it sets off, plus the delays at the UK end.

Given they have supplied a loan vehicle, of similar/higher spec I don't see it as a big issue.

Paul,

Europe is a Logistics Hub for the majority of Japanese Companies to ensure they can quickly service their needs.

Sourcing Parts from Japan is quite rare & reduces the Profits of the Company Involved.

Aha, I get you now....who knows? As I say, it surprised me. I thought they'd be able to source such a part much closer to home - but it appears not to be the case.

Seems the ‘back order’ date on the new driveshafts has shifted further right to early Nov….by the time I get my car back, it will have been over a month with the time spent with courtesy cars definitely eclipsing the time I’ve spent with my own car since buying it. Their pre-sale checks routine appears to be sadly lacking☹️😡

Very true, already thought of that Don😉 Still want mine back…..when it’s running like it should…..as it’s a better looking car😉😉 The whole faff is crazy, and patience is beginning to wear thin…😡

I thought that if a Lexus had any accident history they wouldn't sell them under the ‘lexus approved’ banner 🤔

I'm probably worrying unnecessarily here....all getting rather frustrating now, and all I want is my car back for which I paid over £22K for. I don't want to use this forum as a sounding board after having had a good moan...I think I've been quite well restrained in that respect. If this delay goes on for much longer I'll start to seriously think about going to Lexus UK HQ with details of the whole saga. I will give the dealer the benefit of the doubt, and see how my car goes once I get it back post-repair....if it falls short in any way, it's being rejected, at no cost to me. I feel I really don't need this...and with a Lexus of all cars🙄
