Software update for hud models?

Recommended Posts

Just picked up my car from getting the recalls done and now noticed the Battery % indicator, does this mean I have had a software update to give me better range when the climate is on? I have the takumi model

Yes, if you have the % indicator you have the update.

May 2023 got the update early this year. Standard question - do you have the remaining charge with a % - if you do have this then you already have the update. If you don’t, then tell the dealer he doesn’t know his cars !  You can also tell by seeing the range without a/c on and then turn ‘Auto’ on and if the range reduces by say 30 miles you definitely don’t have the upgrade.

When my RZ450e Premium Plus was delivered in April this year it had the Battery % so thought it had the update - however when at 90% Battery it shows 190 miles remaining BUT when I turn on A/C and hit AUTO it drops to 139 miles (a drop of 51 miles) - is this correct as suggests I do not have the update.

Stephen2312, I think based on what I heard is that in addition to installing the software update (shown by the Battery %) Lexus needs to recalibrate the range (it is a 5 minutes job). Once recalibration is done the range should show 251 miles when the car is fully charged. You may have therefore the software update but Lexus may have forgotten to recalibrate the range (as I said above it is a 5 minutes job)

Not sure where you get 251 miles from. I was one of the first to get the update and fully charged it still shows 220 miles with ac on and around 230 miles with ac off. These figures are very accurate now and a vast improvement from when I got the car. Last weekend I did another 400 mile round trip to London travelling at 70mph wherever possible and this time I got an impressive 3.2 miles /kwh with cooler whether.

Obviously this will drop when the colder whether arrives but as I say, the software update has made a significant improvement, but 251 miles would be a game changer.

My local supplier tells me the update is not available for my car. I bought it July 2023. Premium Plus model with HUD. (UK).

is this true?

My car was bought in June 23 and has the HUD and the update. But they did pause the update on HUD cars for a short time for technical reasons. However as far as I know, all cars should now have it. Speak to Lexus Customer Services as the dealer might not be up to date.

I get exactly the same range as John. This thread confirms that some dealers don’t have a clue about the RZ. I’ve been really pleased with the service and knowledge from my dealer.

I had a concern that the recent recall would involve a system update and maybe wipe out the range update - Lexus software expertise is suspect, as shown by the original range update being fiddled with and then trashing the HUD’s. My dealer confirmed neither the handbrake nor camera recall would involve the system software - they knew the handbrake issue isn’t relevant to Takumi’s as it only covered towing (a tow bar can’t be installed due to the performance dampers I believe) and that the camera recall was just an inspection and it was across the Lexus range and they hadn’t found 1 car needing a replacement.

Yes I think you are probably correct, fully charged it should show 220 miles and not 251 miles

Fully charged I show about 210 (I get 2.6-2.8 miles per kWh). But the A/C on shows a 20-25% drop regardless of miles remaining - Not sure what the range recalibration is that's mentioned above. Does anyone have a contact number to speak to Lexus direct about this?

My Dealer (Lexus Scotland) says I have no updates showing.

Hi all, thought I’d share my experience on this topic.

In August this year, I got an RZ450e Takumi (20 inch wheels). When it was delivered it already had the Battery % display and at 100% charge would show around 230 miles, but when I turned on the AC it would drop to 190 miles or less - more of a drop than I expected with the latest software. Overtime the 230 miles had dropped to around 220 miles at full charge, presumably adapting to driving habits etc.

I had an issue with the stitching of one of my floor mats and so contacted Lexus who agreed to replace them and the dealer then called to arrange me to go in. When they called they told me that my software wasn’t up to date and so they could do that when I come in for the mats. I told them that I have the latest updates as I have the Battery % but they were adamant that there were more updates - so I thought, why not, may as well take them.

I went in today to get it all sorted and they carried out the following:

3927KProduct Enhancement: Reprogramming for EV ECU, BAT ECU, PWC ECU, A/C ECU and Combination Meter ECU

When I picked up the car I had 85% charge left and the range read 230 miles! So when I got home, I plugged in to charge to 100% and it now shows 271 miles and drops to 241 with AC turned on.

Now, I fully expect that this number will fall quite dramatically. It’s not a coincidence to me that 271 miles is the exact quoted range figure in the UK for RZ450e with 18 inch wheels. So my presumption is that after the update the range has set itself to the highest possible range from an RZ450e, and over time when it realises it’s not getting that from 20 inch wheels, plus taking into account my driving style, the type of trips I’m making and temperature etc. it will settle to a lower figure. Only time will tell what that will be.

But I thought it interesting as I’ve never seen a range figure that high in my car and also interesting that perhaps it’s not as simple as having the Battery % icon as to whether you have everything required for the improved range.

P.S. I also got them to turn off the annoying reversing beeping noise! So much better now!

MattH84 - very welcome news. I’ll contact my dealer and enquire. Coincidently I am on a RZ site in America. A guy recently posted his range having run the car in Range mode. His screen shot shows he has driven 146 miles and has 130 miles left - scarily similar to your 271 ! His screen shot also shows a different dash to what I can select so US market must be different. IMG_0980.thumb.jpeg.c5ea8ba077cc414000ccdb2b97385f2d.jpeg

I should also have said that in my car if I turn the Auto heat / ac on and then select full by selecting ‘Front’ the range drops about 30 ish. If I turn the ‘Front’ off and I always then have the fan speed at 3 / Eco then the range goes back up to within about 7 ish of the range without.

Hey Wivenhoe,

I’ve seen that post too… this persons car is on 18inch wheels so it can achieve an improved range over cars on 20s. The WLTP number is 271 miles for 18s, 251 miles on 20s. Let’s see if I can get anywhere close to 250 miles. I have found that it varies so much on the type of driving you’re doing. Some weeks I’m just driving round town and I can easily achieve over 200 miles. Once a month I’ll do a 150 mile round trip mostly on 70mph motorway and the range is more like 180/190 miles. I’ll be interested to see if I notice any difference after this update… although the weather getting colder and colder won’t help!

That screen configuration in the American post is different because on entry models that do not have a heads up display, they have a slightly different drivers display… it’s almost like an old school smartphone interface added to the side of the speedo - UK cars have this too on the Premium model.

Ah this is interesting!

Prior to the update, whether I had the heater/AC on full blast to clear the front screen, or on Eco… it still deducted the same amount of miles from the range counter! It really annoyed me because it can’t have been using the same amount of power.

Hopefully mine might behave more like yours now!

It didn’t occur to me that the display would be different without a HUD.

I suspect that whilst your car had been previously updated, Lexus had changed the range update after the HUD’s had failed and so it wasn’t working the same - it didn’t rectify the very thing the original resolved i.e. the dramatic drop just for turning Auto on. Maybe your latest update rectifies that and that was why they issued it. I’ve asked my dealer if the update is available for my car and I suspect I’ll be told no as I already have it by virtue of the original update. I’ll post what they say.

I contacted my dealer yesterday  and quoted the reference number and details you posted. They came back and said this was the update I had in February and no further updates are available. Puzzled by the 271 miles. I've never seen anything like it on mine and my range is now dropping because of the colder weather.

Ok, interesting that my car had the Battery % update upon delivery, but for some reason not this 3927K update.

I wouldn’t read too much into the 271, it’s not ‘real’. To get 271 miles out of a 64kWh Battery you’d need to be achieving 4.2 miles per kWh… and that just isn’t going to happen on a 450 with 20 inch wheels. Ultimately that range figure will change over time depending on how each individual car is driven… so people who typically drive motorway miles will eventually see a lower number than those doing around town miles… and you never know who is an economical driver and who isn’t… so you can’t directly compare between two people’s cars, especially over the internet.

I fully expect that number to come down to somewhere similar to where it was before, but hopefully turning the heating on won’t have such a big loss in range now though!
