Resetting TPMS on a 2020 NX 300h after moving wheels

Hi,

I've got a 2020 NX 300h and want to rotate the tyres on it but the garage have said that it may cause the TPMS to have problems if the wheels are registered to specific hubs. Does anyone know if the reset TPMS option in the car menu would sort that or is it something that needs changing through the OBD port and, if it is, would I be able to do that myself if I get a Carista or something similar or is it more involved than that?

it should be fine, just had mine swapped back to front, then two new on the back.
UK TPMS only reports back a low pressure tyre, but not which one.
US models are "corner" specific.

Matt... Same Car Same Year.. Had my lexus in for Service last week and they Remove all 4 Tyres to inspect the Brake Discs/Callipers for Wear..Did Notice Though that the Tyres which were taken of were Fitted back on the same Wheels they came off... So It Could be that the TPMS signal to the Computer Is Correlated to the Dynamics of the Car..Just a Thought..!!! If Anyone Else can Throw any light on this That would be Helpful..TBH Should have asked the Mechanic......!!!!!

Hi,  I am awaiting my first  Lexus car and having watched many! videos and reviews did look at a copy of the NX450H manual.

It does seem to state on that model that tyre rotation can be set up by the owner to reset the system to accommodate tyre movements.

Not sure about 300H model but its worth a browse

My NX just back from its annual service. I had asked for the tyres to be rotated, as indicated in the manual but the garage said that tyre rotation wasn't included in the servicing schedule. The tyres had been rotated at the last servicing and I had rotated them at the 6 month point. I wasn't worried about the TPMS; if I had a tyre with a low pressure, I figure I would see which one it was; if not, I would have used my tyre pressure gauge to check. The garage kindly rotated the tyres at no cost but did say that their manual allocates 0.8hrs for tyre rotation; swapping the wheels/tyres was easy but reprogramming the system was the bit that took the time.

Ah, that makes sense. I've never actually had a low pressure warning in the 7 years I've NX's so hadn't realised that. I was always surprised that it didn't give me the tyre pressures on the 4 wheels (even my wife's Fiesta does that!) so it makes sense that it's not corner specific.

Thanks for that. I know that if you're rotating you need to be specific about which wheel goes to where and there are mixed opinions on whether you should rotate or not (Costco for instance will always insist on putting new tyres on the rear if you're only getting 2 done).

I think that's new on the Gen 2 NXs, but have fun with your new car: the NX is fantastic and the Gen 2 ones seem even nicer (I've had them as courtesy cars). I've had 2 NXs from new and they have been absolutely bulletproof in terms of reliability and so comfortable. I'm not particularly impressed with how Lexus have handled the Canbus theft issue, but the cars themselves are fantastic.

Thanks very much for this, and interesting to hear. I suspect that it might be different for different cars (I suspect the 450h has 'proper' TPMS which gives you the pressure of the individual tyres which would explain it.

 

 

Thanks so much everyone, I think I'm just going to switch them around and see what happens. I may deflate one a bit to see what I get when I do get a warning as well 😀

Are they Lexus dealers, who I would expect to know about the TPMS?

Actually, Matt, all tyre manufacturers and fitters will recommend that the newest tyres go on the rear axle.  You’re right about tyre rotation.  

Some folk - myself included - run tyres down to 3mm and then replace the set.  That’s because I either run Asymmetric or Directional brands that can only be rotated fire and aft anyway.

The argument against rotating is that it equalises wear and forces the replacement of all four, which is not always financially convenient.

Hi Len. No, it's not Lexus, it was in an independent for a puncture repair when I asked about it.

Regarding the tyre rotation, the tyre manufacturers don't recommend that they aren't rotated (which obviously isn't quite the same as saying that new tyres should go on the rears to be fair: I probably just confused things with that comment!).

For me I'd ideally like them all to need replacing at the same time because I want to switch over to the Cross Climate 2 when I switch and it seems such a waste binning tyres with quite a lot of miles left on them 😀

Excellent choice!

I would have had them at my last tyre change but my Lexus wears different sizes on the two axles - and Michelin only made one of them at the time.

Only downside is that they are directional, so you can only swap front and back  - and not diagonally.

Hopefully, you’ll have no problems with the TPMS when the time comes.
