Lexus service schedule and warranty

Hi all, 

Purchased an approved used 2020 with 44k on the clock with its last service at 44k.

Since the service schedule is out of line with the recommended 40/50k etc, if I don’t get it done until 54k and there happens to be an engine issue, is the warranty going to be voided due to a lack of maintenance at the recommended mileages?

I asked this at the dealership and although I initially thought they stated I don’t need to get a service until 54k, now I’m finding their answer slightly cryptic and unclear.

The service activated warranty lasts for 10k miles or 12 months whichever comes first following the service. So if it was done at 44k miles the car is covered until 54k miles unless 12 months come up first before the mileage reaches 54k. The car should also have a Used Car warranty on it as well.

Thanks. It was just the wording in the warranty which states the service schedule must be followed for the warranty to be valid, which had me thinking if I get spark plugs at 64k and something goes wrong is there going to be an issue. Probably looking too much into it.

It's not uncommon for service intervals to get out of sync with mileage if less than 10k miles are done per annum and so items on the service schedule will be done based on the age or at the closest mileage. If you have the car serviced by Lexus they will do what is needed when so you will have no cause for concern regards the warranty so long as you take it in within the 10k miles / 12 months whichever comes first each time.

I just booked my car in for its annual service. It has done 40K miles and is 7 yrs old ( BTW - No problems with it - ever! ).

Lexus insisted on doing an 80K full service for £580 despite the low mileage. When they were questioned they said they only take the age into account and not the mileage so a 7 or 8 yr old car gets an 80K service i.e. 10K miles per year x 8.

Lexus logic or what?   I agreed because I get the extra years warranty and maybe breakdown cover - not too sure about that bit.

It doesn't really matter as they alternate between intermediate and full at a fixed price regardless of what work is done. So if you do less than 10k miles per annum on the basis of treating the years as mileage then potentially you get more done sooner (like spark plugs).

Not Breakdown Cover..You Only Have That Cover from Lexus for the first Three Years Thereafter You Have to pay for it..I Would advise you to Get breakdown cover from the AA...!!!

Lexus Roadside Assistance is provided through the AA. The Lexus price is good value If you utilise the whole package (so two cars - the Lexus and any other and two drivers, full UK and and European cover for the Lexus) as it's all included - but you can't delete it and save money. If you need less cover then going directly to AA or another will allow flexibility to choose the cover and price needed.

Actually, according to the documentation I have with my 2014 IS300h the spark plugs are changed by mileage not by age. This says that they're due for change at 60,000 miles. This used to be an issue because it used to make the 60,000 mile service more expensive than other major services. But Lexus now seems to have switched to fixed prices regardless of what parts are used. So it's no longer much of any issue.

obviously there are forum members reporting faults they have had but i can't remember anyone ever reporting engine mechanical issues. I wonder if anyone has had any engine problems.

There have been problems with starting because of immobiliser faults or because the 12v Battery is dead (which is very common!). But I don't remember seeing reports of any actual engine faults. Has this been a concern in your previous cars?

In fact, the hybrid system operates to avoid much stress on the engine. For example, when starting the engine it spins it to around 1,000 rpm before it provides any spark to fire the engine. Conventional cars start at much lower rpm, where greater stress and vibration is caused as it starts up. I'm not sure about this engine but I also remember reading that the Prius hybrid system  would fire initially only on two cylinders to make the start as smooth as possible.

The engine also idles at around 1,000 rpm instead of the more stressful 400-500 rpm of a conventional car. I've found that most of the time in everyday driving the engine will be running at only around 1,500 to 2,000 rpm, even at 70 mph. There's also no turbo to add stress to the engine.

So you may not need to be concerned about the engine itself. Maybe you've had problems in other cars which makes you cautious about the engine.

They will also be changed at 6-years if <60,000 miles, mine were done at the last service and there is no additional charge over the price of a full service.

As Thackeray stated, this is no longer an issue because each major service is the same price (they put up the price of a basic 20k service to offset the extra cost a 60k service). In the past however, people didn't want to pay for a 60k mile service, which replaces the plugs, when their vehicle had done less than 60k miles and they didn't need replacing.
