Lexus partners with Tracker to enhance vehicle security

Having read the Lexus press release "Lexus partners with Tracker to enhance vehicle security" that Lexus put out on 12th September; I called my dealer. I was told by the dealer that they would not fit a tracker as I have a Ghost fitted which they said was much better than the tracker and could be hard to fit as the Ghost is already fitted. I only know what they tell me 🙂

I would get back to your dealer.  I have just had a tracker fitted, the dealer was aware that I already had a Ghost 2. They fitted it without any problems.

Tracker Retrieve, its a single use tracker. They also fit a OBD, once it is fitted you get a email from Tracker with details of how to download the Tracker app.

Thanks - interesting that it's that model. I had a look on the Tracker site and according to the feature comparison, the Retrieve doesn't support the use of the app or geofencing, which were mentioned in the press release. It looked more likely to be the Locate version... but I suppose anything is better than nothing....

I think it is the OBD device that supports the app and geofencing.

Just think, Lexus could have just got a bulk order of an S5 tracker with driver recognition & no tag = no start which would help cure both the theft issue & also the insurance issue.

Instead you get two separate easy to install devices & the thieves can still drive the vehicle away 🙄

It does seem a bit cheap by Lexus.  One concern with fitting something on the OBD port is how easily removable it is by a thief. I'd read that they plugged something into the OBD port to program a new key so they could just pull the tracker unit out & drop it out the door, unless it is somehow locked in place on the OBD port.

I have my NX F sport fitted with Ghost2 & scorpion tracker with no issue so they could fit the tracker.

Also a guy working on Toyota told me they are fitting Ghost2 & trackers for the Rav4 it should be same for NX.

I have got in touch with Lexus UK and their reply has informed me that my car NX450 MY24 is "Upon checking our system, I found that your vehicle is not eligible for the TRACKER and OBD device campaign. This is because it was built on a different platform that prevents criminals from accessing the vehicle in the same way." All this is good news, why no one could tell me this sooner.

They have shown me why I go to Lexus, they still offer some old school service and offered me a free Tracker which I have accepted. This is why this is my second Lexus and in year or so I will be looking at Lexus again

Have you checked the official statement from Lexus, that was pinned to the top of this group?

This shows that the only models of NX affected by the Canbus issue are 2017/09 to 2021/10, so older and newer NX models are not affected and I presume not eligible for free trackers as they're not necessary.

My NX 350h was built in November 2021 but my dealer said I am on the Lexus List to receive a free Tracker and it is being fitted in November.

Same here, NX450h built May 2022 and dealer says “after checking the Lexus system it is eligible for a free Tracker”

It is scheduled to be fitted next week whilst they are doing other updates so I guess we wait & see 🤔

I have had the tracker fitted foc by Lexus Bolton today. They confirm that there is no OBD port on  the later NX  including mine but I was still entitled for the tracker to be fitted.  I would check with dealership to see if your vehicle is included.

Strange as the EU requirements stipulate vehicles with an ICE require OBD port.

AFAIK only Tesla don't have OBD due to the all electric platform.

Maybe a misunderstanding or Lexus Bolton are "being economical with the truth" - there is definitely an OBD port on the Gen 2 NX.

Just had a call out of the blue from my local dealer to arrange a date for me to have the tracker fitted to my NX350h (yes, they called me rather than the reverse 😀).

I didn't think they were offering it to Gen 2:NX owners as I was under the impression that that particular model wasn't prone to the canbus vulnerability. Anyway, not wishing to look a gift horse in the mouth, I have the car booked in for Thursday.

I realise that the type of tracker being offered has it's limitations but it's better than nothing plus it may help with insurance renewal costs, especially considering that I am currently with Lexus Insurance.

According To What I Have Heard It Takes Two Visits To Install This Tracker....Could be wrong !!!! Something about the Geofence Install..!!!!

As I noted many posts previous, you are incorrect, I had both a tracker and GEO fitted to a late 2022 Gen 2 NX in one visit

Maybe I am wrong, had a busy few weeks but my local dealer has not got back me.
They still have time as I won’t be looking for a new car for at least a year. 😀

I will call them towards the end of the month.

I had it fitted to my Lexus NX300h, it's just an OBD tracker which a thief can unplug and throw away as soon as they get inside the car. Kind of feels cheap and lazy by Lexus to be honest.

That OBD device will give you a warning that it has been unplugged. The tracker is a separate device.

An S5 tracker with no tag = no start would have been a much better solution as it would stop the vehicle being driven away in the first place.

Seems Lexus / Toyota have gone with the cheapest & easiest to install " solution " that still doesn't solve the real underlying issue, being able to enter then drive the vehicle away easily.

I tried unplugging it, didn't get any warnings. Left the device at home, drove the car a mile away, checked the tracker app and it showed as if the car was at home. So I think that's the actual tracker.

The tracker is only activated when you report the vehicle as stolen.
