Lexus partners with Tracker to enhance vehicle security

Recommended Posts

Having read the Lexus press release "Lexus partners with Tracker to enhance vehicle security" that Lexus put out on 12th September; I called my dealer. I was told by the dealer that they would not fit a tracker as I have a Ghost fitted which they said was much better than the tracker and could be hard to fit as the Ghost is already fitted. I only know what they tell me 🙂

Just had a call out of the blue from my local dealer to arrange a date for me to have the tracker fitted to my NX350h (yes, they called me rather than the reverse 😀).

I didn't think they were offering it to Gen 2:NX owners as I was under the impression that that particular model wasn't prone to the canbus vulnerability. Anyway, not wishing to look a gift horse in the mouth, I have the car booked in for Thursday.

I realise that the type of tracker being offered has it's limitations but it's better than nothing plus it may help with insurance renewal costs, especially considering that I am currently with Lexus Insurance.

That's an interesting development!

Yes, very.

I have dropped my dealer an email, so will be interesting to see what they say.

Can anyone confirm if having a Tracker fitted does affect the insurance cost these days because when I enquired about this a few years ago the answer was 'No'.

I used to fill in my online insurance quote stating that I didn't have a Tracker and then, on getting the quote, amended to say that I did have a Tracker. Guess what the difference in quote was?

Had reply back from my dealer and they said my car (2024 350h) is not eligible for the tracker, so at least I know.

Does seem odd that some 350/450’s are getting them fitted… maybe it’s by production date? Personally I thought all Gen 2’s had the latest safety gear, but maybe not ….

Exactly my thoughts, it even says so in the Press release Toyota/Lexus emailed to me, so I am just confused as to why some Gen 2’s are having them fitted.

My 350h was a very early build (December 2021) however I would imagine/hope that it has the new security protocols.

I must admit that I'm half expecting my dealer to call me before Thursday (or even on the day) and say that there's been a mix-up and unfortunately my car isn't eligible. But until that happens I will keep schtum 😉

I have an appointment next week for a recall at which the dealer will also fit a tracker together with some further security updates - was originally booked in this week but Lexus UK has released further updates and the dealer is awaiting for the parts to arrive, hence the delay until next week.  Both Lexus UK and the dealer have confirmed that my 2022 built NX is not susceptible to the CANBUS injection theft, which ties in with the Lexus press release.  Maybe they are reacting to those of us who continually complain to Lexus UK HO and the dealer about the shocking after sales customer service in recent years  - this from a Lexus owner of various models over 20 years.

Ken.......that is certainly the case with the plug in 450h but not the Gen 1 NX350h

Gen 1 is 300h, Gen 2 is 350h, which according to all the blurb is not eligible for the tracker, so I am still confused as to why some Gen 2’s are getting them

As yet I have not heard of any Gen2 attempted thefts so maybe the crim’s know they are protected, unless I have missed that of course 🤔

After (and only after 😀) I have had the tracker installed tomorrow I may ask the question as to why Lexus felt it necessary to install it on my Gen 2. If so, I will report back here.

My car just back from its annual service and for ZGG47 to be done and a tracker has been installed. I was given a card with a number to call if my car is stolen but no other details were provided, although I was told that I should receive something in the post in the next couple of weeks. No mention was made about any other security enhancements. I don't think the tracker is related to CanBus, the Gen 2 NX does not suffer from this but I guess the thieves don't always know the difference. I'll post more general details about the system if and when I get some information on the tracker that's been fitted. For now, I'm just treating it as a tracker; there isn't even a sticker to warn thieves, but maybe it will help in the recovery of my car if it does get stolen and may reduce my insurance when it comes up for renewal (forever the optimist).

I meant to also add, the NX's impacted (by CANBUS) are those produced during the following time frame: 09/17 to 10/21.

@Harrier Man was your NX produced before October 2021? My NX 350h was built in November 2021 and delivered to me on 31 January 2022.

I am assuming that in view of @FSPORT3 comments above I wasn’t offered a tracker when I had my 30k service earlier this week.

I have Nx300h 2014 - was told by Edgware Lexus that they can't or don't put trackers in those. Very strange as they couldn't tellme why.

I requested a written confirmation if my car was susceptible to the CanBus and if so, why can't a tracker be put on.

As I noted above mine is a late 2022 build, but the dealer has offered a tracker plus other security enhancements which are being fitted next week.

Just got back from having the tracker fitted to my NX350h. Have received a plastic card with the device's serial number and Tracker contact details plus a "welcome" email from them.

I did ask the question as to why I was offered the tracker bearing in mind that the Gen 2 NX is (supposedly) not prone to the canbus vulnerability and was told that Lexus (or maybe my dealer franchise alone?) were offering this to owners of the most popular models (e.g. RX; NX and some UX) due to the rise in crime against these models in recent years (regardless of the method by which they are stolen).  As an aside, It was mentioned that authorities are seeing a huge rise in incidents of Lexus cars being stolen for parts to be exported to Russia. Since Lexus pulled put of the Russian market to voice it's disapproval to Russia's aggression against Ukraine, it seems that a large "black market" has arisen there for spare parts - obtained by hook or by crook.

Not sure why others on here have had a negative response from their dealers when enquiring about the tracker but maybe it's limited to particular Lexus dealer franchises or possibly location (I assume that London and the South East has been hit hardest by car crime)?

My car was built in 2022 and first delivered and registered in September 2022. I was proactive in asking for the tracker after reading on this forum that some dealers had offered it to Gen 2 NX owners. I live about 150 miles from my dealer so they may have prioritised mine to save me a long return trip at a later date.

Just spoke to my local dealer (Reading) and they confirmed my car is in scope for a free tracker - I got my NX in June this year (MY25).
