Because of the canbus issue affecting the RX 4th generation, I am now going to part exchange  it for a 5th generation RX 450H+ or a less than 2 years old RX500H. It is a pity as I wanted to keep it and change instead my other car (not a Lexus) to an RZ but the canbus issue has made me revisite my plans (I do not want sleepless nights when I park my car off street or at the airport etc).

My question relates to the RX 500H and whether it requires special maintenance (such as regular addition of oil every few thousands miles) or anything else unusual  considering it has a turbo ? Thank you

Not in my experience, 22k miles so far and engine/gearbox has been great. Nothing done other than service every 10k miles as usual.

Yeah, just standard servicing. The turbo isn't a sealed unit like some superchargers - it gets oil from the engine which is changed normally at each service.

Thank you so much, another question is I use my RX 4th generation twice a year in the mountains in France/Switzerland where snow and ice can be a challenge (although my RX has been great when equipped with snow tyres or chains). I assume it should be the same with the 500H ? Thank you

It will be fine. The rear motor is more powerful than your current RX so it has better distribution of power if needed.

It would be worth test driving the 500h, it will drive differently to what you a use to given that is has an auto transmission rather than a CVT.

I will do on PCP over 4 years given that I do not know how the market will evolve until then. If depreciation is significant at the end of the 4 years I will give it back but if not I will keep it (and of course it will depreciate). As mentioned earlier I am not considering any other brand, I love Lexus and will stick with them. I have a second car (not Lexus but still Japanese) that is fine and  that I wanted to part exchange for an RZ but now because of the canbus issue I have to change my plan and keep my second car and trade instead my RX for a newer version

It should be fine, it has a snow/rock/mud button, but no ev mode button on the 500h. It will run in EV mode up to about 40mph for a short distance though.

It also has rear steering and a 6spd auto. It drives and handles very differently to the RX450 4th gen. I would advise a test drive.

tyre size is a bit odd at 235/50/r21, not sure how available cross climate or snow tyres are. Summers are only available from a few brands.

I wouldn’t be too disappointed, I think you have dodged a bullet not buying the RZ. The RX500h looks like a much better prospect.
