On my new NX I set the speed limit warning to ‘visual only’ but every time I get in the car it has reset back to ‘audible & visual’. This generally also leads to audible comments from the passenger side of the vehicle! Anyone else having this issue (with the car, not the passenger) ? Is this a mandated safety ‘feature’ ?

thanks

I have mine selected for audible and visual as I like the warning, it is very easy to go above the speed limit as the NX is so quiet.

Resetting back to audible every time is probably down to latest legislation.

I have come from a Prius which had a HUD, so after being spoilt for over seven years it’s very useful for me.

The noise is a very discreet bong and not in your face like the Prius which had spoken warnings e.g. “The Speed Limit is 30 miles per hour” and if you had your music up loud she was deafening 😆

Thanks - I test drove an NX in May and noticed in the HUD that when the speed limit was exceeded, the speed limit indicator turned orange which I thought was very good.  My NX HUD doesn’t do that, just the limit indicator in the main display flashes instead. I may have a later software version but preferred the older approach as there’s no warning in the HUD now.

I do not have HUD, but interesting you that yours flashes in the main display, mine just turns red.

My software was updated when the car was delivered in March and as far as I am aware there haven’t been any updates since, unless there was one specific to models with HUD?

Hopefully someone with the HUD will come along and be able to help you more.

Like @Steppy I don't have a HUD and I also just get the speed limit indicator turning red; also no audible alarm, but not sure if that was turned off when I picked the car up in May.

I have a HUD and the speed limit turns solid red if the limit is exceeded but there is no audible alert.

That’s how it was during my testdrive. You may well get a different behaviour when you next have a software update…..

I don't think it is mandatory to have a speed limit warning yet is it? If not, I don't see how it can be a legislative issue for having audio as well as visual.

My speed warning is often wrong as the system often picks up the 30mph city limit when I go around a roundabout onto the bypass (national speed limit, ie 60mph) and on the A9 it will incorrectly pick up the 50mph HGV limit and turn red. Heaven help us if (when) the vehicle's speed is auto adjusted to what the car thinks the limit is.

Not 100% sure but you can configure the HUD somewhere in the settings including how many miles above the limit you want to choose before it goes red.

This is what I did and set it at 5mph over the limit. Mind you, I did all this 2.5 years ago……

"On 6th July 2022, speed limiters became a legal requirement for all new cars manufactured in Europe.

From 7th July 2024 onwards, all car manufacturers will be legally required to ensure any cars on sale in their showrooms have speed limiters fitted. This means that any showroom cars without speed limiters will need to have the technology retrofitted."

In my ISF when you go over 100mph a loud voice comes through the speakers " Speed limits?? - We don't need no steeenkin' speed limits! and then it spits on the ground.  Does anybody else have a car with this feature?🤔.

Respect to Mel Brooks.

My 350h which was delivered in June defaults to audible and visual each time.  I queried this with the dealer who said this is the default position.  I hear three low beeps and the speed limit sign in the HUD flashes.  I'm OK with beeps generally although a little annoying when it beeps at 11mph in my local John Lewis car park where the limit is 10mph!

This morning I had the speed limit disappear from the HUD when I exceeded it. Interesting as I was doing 31 in a 30 zone with cruise control on and the RSA corner markers appeared around the speed limit in the central display but all I had in the HUD were the markers but no circle with the speed limit inside. Noticed this a couple of times - hopefully a bug that will be fixed in next update….

Thanks, but I just checked and I don’t have that option or anything similar in the HUD or RSA settings. It’s there in the manual (Excess Speed Notification Level, top of page 802) but  it’s not there in the car….

If I get beeps when I go 1 mph (or even 5mph) over the speed limit then the car will have to go! I hate beeps!🤬

I agree - hence my original post ! At the moment I have to play with the settings every time I get in the car ... I'd be happy with a tolerance setting like you/others have but 1mph is a bit severe, as usually I'm accelerating up to the limit and trying the hit the cruise control button on the limit but missing slightly. I could always just slow down I suppose....😀

I have mine set at 3mph above and find the bong very useful, especially driving in unfamiliar places.

Have you tried turning down the volume for alerts as an alternative to switching them off every time?

You shouldn’t be forced to slow down because when your speedometer reads 70mph you are actually doing approximately 67mph as measured by the GPS. For this reason I have just driven 460 miles to Scotland over the last 2 days with my cruise control set to 74mph knowing that I am not going to get a speeding ticket. If you get a beep at 71mph the beep is erroneous…..

No I hadn't thought of that - thanks -will investigate the option (if it still exists)...!

Yes, I appreciate that the speedometer overreads by a few mph but it's just the bonging that I dislike. Just been out to the car & it definitely does not save my preference for this setting - set the visual only, switch off, open car door, screen goes blank, close car door, switch on, back to visual & audible.....I hope a software update restores the ability to save the preference (everything else stays as set), or maybe it's here to stay. Enjoy your excess speed notification level while you have it (and check contents of any software update very carefully when the next one is offered) !😀

You have an NX350h that is about one year newer than ours. We have the over speed tolerance setting mentioned above and can turn of the audible warning but I suspect that the new EU legislation has made Lexus change the firmware so that you no longer have these options.

My main issue with the ISA system is the hopeless inaccuracy of the speed limit detection cameras in the car. Ours quite happily reads 70mph in 40mph limits as signs are obscured by overgrown vegetation.

Agreed, I think that as the option is not there in the settings that this is the future ......for new cars at least....I have contacted Lexus CR to see what they say, given that the manual has the option listed...

I've just had a reply back from Lexus Customer Relations:

Good afternoon Ian,

Thank you for contacting Lexus UK, we appreciate the reasons why you have contacted us.

I have taken the liberty of liaising with our Product Technical Specialists with regards to your query surrounding the road sign assist functionality, and it is with regret to inform you this feature will always revert back to audible on every ignition cycle due to the new ISA Regulations. This is not a Toyota/Lexus decision this is due to the regulation for all manufactures.

Please note you are able to change the Excess speed notification level, instructions on how to change the settings for this feature can be found in the owner's manual, If you cannot find this then we would recommend visiting your local Lexus Centre for further assistance.

I am sorry for any disappointment that this may cause, but thank you for giving us the opportunity to review and respond.

Thank you for contacting Lexus UK.

Kind regards

It's not true (for me) about being able to change the Excess speed notification level, and there's definitely a bug that removes the speed limit altogether from the HUD when the limit is exceeded. Switching HUD off & on or changing HUD mode restores the speed limit in the HUD when speed is above limit. Hoping for a software update soon....
