Windscreen needed 🙁

Recommended Posts

Sadly our Takumi has a cracked screen, the insurance want to use Auto Windscreens to replace it with one of theirs, I would rather have a genuine one fitted, anyone else gone through this ?

Most insurance companies will let you choose an alternate repairer, but will charge an additional policy excess, check the details of your policy.

If you go with an alternate product and have HUD make sure its compatible.

Just because it's Auto Windscreens doesn't mean it won't be a genuine Lexus branded screen.

When I had the screen replaced in my RC it had to come from the Lexus.eu as there were no pattern screens in the UK. Took a couple of weeks to arrive..

This is true but I suspect the UX sells in sufficient quantities for in-region companies to produce replacements (even Lexus might source within Europe (with Lexus markings added)).

Personally I've never had an issue with a third party screen - normally always produced to OEM spec. as there are very few producers for screens worldwide. Just need to make sure it is the same spec (i.e. HUD or not, DAB or not, tinting the same colour, acoustic etc. etc.).

I spoke with the manager of one local company who confirmed virtually all screens come from just two manufacturers and are manufacture to the same specs but car manufacturers set very tight quality levels and only a relatively small percentage achieve those and are branded OE. The others are sold as pattern parts and the layman is generally hard pressed to spot the differences. More often than not it is the optical distortion level that fails.

Just spoken to the guys at my local Auto Windscreen depot, all of theirs are made by Pilkington, seems all I can do is ask the insurance for a genuine replacement and hope for the best, the VIN number should ensure it’s the correct one.

Pilkington certainly know how to make First Class glass and I wouldn’t hesitate to accept
