Hi

 

Just had the tyres replaced in My GS 300H and this tpms sensor was sitting broken in one of the tyres.

Any advice please?

Is it advisable to get it replaced, fitted and programmed by a Lexus dealer, or can aftermarket ones be used, provided they’re programmed somehow?

Had the same issue years back on a BMW, was cheaper to get all 4 aftermarket and programmed than getting just the one from main dealer!

But not sure on the Lexus, as recently bought this and first ever one.

Well, was there any dashboard indication of a pressure problem when you went to the tyre place? If not, the tyre fitter must have broken the sensor.  I don't know what their responsibility is now but they broke it ( I suspect) - they should fix it.

Reports on here vary - I think some people have got away with non-genuine replacements but others have reported that they don't work. Best to get a genuine one - you can get them from LexusPartsDirect for £70 odd quid but they need to be coded with Techstream.

I don't know if a Lexus dealer would code sensors you haven't bought from them - possibly not even if it was a genuine sensor. Techstream is unofficially available from a popular auction site

You do need to get it fixed - they are mandatory for MoT on 2015 cars.

Mine were starting to get Battery failure (2007 car).Local  TPMS 'specialists' (!) ended up fitting but not programming ("anything but a lexus mate"), so didnt pay for installation, but.....ended up getting all 4 replaced at a jap cars specialist whilst biting a largeish bullet. Cheaper than Lex dealer though, and now I am assuming no more tpms woes for me.......I hope!! Warning lights flashing on the dash were driving me mad. I looked at techstream coding but way way out of my league, i can only manage a mobile phone. My Lex dealer refused to code any sensor not supplied by them.

Something to be said for the KISS approach?  Seems like overkill, to have to have £300 worth (‘worth’?) of gizmos just to tell you tyres -which are meant to stay inflated,need attention. Surely easier to check manually every so often?

Indeed so, but you have to have them - blame the politicians.

Recently had this exact situation although I knew it was broken before tyre replacement as it was flagged up during service service. Quoted around£125 at Lexus at the time. Aftermarket one fitted and cloned by Eden Tyre Services during tyre replacement because it was still working despite being loose in wheel/tyre.  £65 +vat. No problems at all.

There are also repair kits available if the valve stem is broken.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

 

yes it does seem as though the tyre shop that replaced the tyres broke it but after an hour long argument with them I didn’t get anywhere as they claimed it was already broken, but I didn’t hear any noise etc before.

 

have complained via their website but doubt it’ll go anywhere.

 

managed to get one fitted earlier, £80 supply fit and programme, but on the steep side but I didn’t want the hassle for another day!

Do you ‘have to’ have them, legally,or is it that they’re interconnected to the computer in the car,to driving detriment?

They don't affect the car operation - they are just a warning. 

All cars 2014 on have to have them working. Originally an EU regulation I think.
