So I go into the decorating shop and ask 'where do you have your scumble?'. Behind the counter bemused looks all round  and 'what's that?'. A decorator being served looks over and says' you won't find that here ,there's no call for it anymore'. I leave and go the next decorating shop that's been there decades and rinse repeat. Head hung low the 'dinsoaur' leaves to look online. Thank you amazon (who else?), it really wasn't that hard.

I guess if you don't want bog standard white emulsion these days then you are an endangered species.

I quite agree 🤩

I recall the scumble era.

Only remember it well, as in the next valley to me is a company called Scumble Goosie who strangely enough do not specify a scumble option for the finish on their furniture.

They are opposite the local paint specialist, maybe I ought to nip in and see if scumble means anythnig to the pain merchants (they do the sort of stuff you never see in B&Q or even half decent Hardware store).

I am not keen on going to amazon unless I really have to, though I am not averse to making Jeff Bezos so rich he can potter off the Mars and avoid paying his taxes there instead.

I got coerced into this. A hot water cylinder had  a small leak damaging the ceiling below. I cut it all back, but in doing so uncovered a section of wall I had scumbled and stencilled 20 plus years ago. The wife went 'ooh I like,  do it again'. In fairness I enjoy doing that stuff. Over the years I have marbled, colour washed , ragged, stippled, dragged on everything from ceilings ,walls, to furniture. Had thought I might be done with all that ,but apparently not. Thought just buying a scumble might save me making my own although it's not that hard. Bit of boiled linseed oil, add white spirit and the artists oil colour of choice and away you go. I will say this stuff is mega durable although the oil content can lead to colour change over the years.

Well, now you know more about scumble than you wanted , or needed to.

scumble

I thought scumble was a description of the local yoofs hanging around the shopping centre after dark, i.e. Scum ambling about??😇.

As in "we're just going down the offy for a litre of cider, a tramps underpants flavoured vape, an NO2 cylinder or two, a bit of aggro and a scumble"

I bet those 'yoofs' are really just sensitive souls who would never be up for a scumble on Saturday nights. Anyway who am I to talk having been ejected from entertainment establishments at least 3 times in my memory in my 'yoof' of course. We won' t count the times not in my memory, but counted through ripped shirts etc. Innocent bystander syndrome of course.(sic).

those yoofs are sensitive souls with clear Mental Health Issues and worthy of some tlc from the Drs and Nurses that MUST pamper to their every need as they are sooooo needy ...  and they need a further ££££ handout to satiate their souls, nay booze and drugs crazed NEEDS that the, WE, NEED to help them with

'Ave an 'eart eh !    Poor things 😇

Wasn't it PJ and Duncan who had a hit with "Let's Get Ready To Scumble"?

I know what you mean,  having been in IT for 44 years now, about 24 years ago I was struggling to get some printing app working on my PC.  My 5 year old daughter saved the day. At work I feel like I know nothing about the tech, one of my 23 yr old colleagues just learns like a sponge.

The only things us oldies bring to the party is the experience of not panicking and knowing how to talk down the angriest of clients.

Knowing how enthralled (sic) you all were by the Scumble topic I thought I would feed your appetite to know more.

Here are a couple of pics showing it in process.

The base is done in eggshell Calico. The scumble is made using artists Violet oil paint. It is crosshatched application followed by a ragging using stockinette. As ever it is a process of trial and error. The initial application result was just too dense/strong. Hence, the section shown has been rubbed down using a variety of grades of paper. This removes some of the colour giving a more faded/aged look. Also removes some of the sheen from the oil based scumble. If you are really expert at this you could get there using a water based mix, but that requires a different skill level as the water based mix by implication dries very quickly giving you little time to work with the scumble. Certainly you couldn't then rub it down as I have done here. You would need to be very sure that the colour was right straight out of the pot.

On top of the finish shown here there will be a stencil running horizontally around the room midway between picture rail and cornice. No, it won't feature various prehistoric creatures although it probably should.

I had forgotten just how much work is involved in doing this stuff. When I was doing it years ago it was meant to endure for 10 to 20 years or so. Easy really given the oil content is incredibly durable. Today I ask myself what the hell am I doing this for ,because 10 to 20 years just isn't credible unless the afterlife holds secrets I am not yet privvy to. Nonetheless I have started so i shall finish, echoes of Bamber Gascoigne.

You can just glimpse a piece of glass work I did in 1995. I say I did. What I meant is I drew it and a local glass worker created it for me from the artwork supplied.

With justification you may have been thinking has that guy dropped off the edge of the world, or something , because he's been conspicuously absent from this place for awhile.

I have been busy for some time now with other matters. Even my poor cars have been gathering dust on the driveway.

So, full disclosure, I was never happy with my wife's idea of doing a stencil on top of my scumbling. My alternative was to do a murial (sic). Unfortunately, a great imagination I have never been blessed with albeit I know one end of a brush from another. Anyway with not too much research I found a bit of interesting Victoriana to copy. It took 4 days marking out followed by a couple of weeks plus of paint work, but finally I am finished. It's down below for anybodys interest.

In that Bond movie he says "Never say never". Codswallop, I am saying never again will I suck myself into this. i HOPE i NEVER SEE A PAINT BRUSH AGAIN !

On a positive note the wife bought me a lovely Carmenere from the Colchagua Valley, my favourite wine of all as a thank you.

I did have mid project overnighter in Buxton to decompress. Whilst there paid a visit to Chatsworth House.

Sometimes you see things and think may be there is something to the idea that superior beings dropped to earth a long time ago and they ,or their progeny have been with us ever since. How else do you explain how some people are just so gifted they don't even resemble the rest of us in terms of skills, or abilities.

I look at the stuff below and I cannot even imagine having the skills to do anything like that.

Nope, wife's Cooper. Wouldn't trust Lexigirl to a car park I don't know.
