Our 69 Takumi will soon be needing new shoes so am canvassing for opinions, i know this has been talked to death, but I am interested in peoples real world experiences. I think the original Bridgestone run flats are very poor, not much grip and very noisy, ive driven a new UX with the next generation Bridgestone tyres and i dont think they are any better tbh. So the options as i see it are, alternative brand run flats that are much quieter on the road, normal 18’s maybe a 60 profile and carry a puncture kit, or swap to 17 rims with a 60 or 70 profile with a puncture kit. Thanks

If you deviate the profile away from standard type-approved sizes for the UX then you will need to inform your insurance company of a modification and understand you will create an error in your speedo.

My run flats are Dunlop and to me, they are very good so will be sticking with them

Colin, i’m well aware of all the implications, i spent many years in the motor trade, i just want to canvas opinion from other UX owners who might have gone down other options before i start spending money.

Fourbanks, thanks, have you noticed much difference in road noise ?

Hi Ian

The option I have chosen is to have a space saver / jack in the boot under the main boot floor. I purchased a used Lexus tyre and wheel from eBay for £30 and a jack and handle for £10. 

I'm still on the original Bridgestone run flats and when I need new tyres, I'll be going for the same size but normal (not run flat) all season tyres.

They seam very quiet on motorways and good roads that are tarmacked. Locally where i live the roads aren't great, but the noise level is still very good I find 

on a safety level, they are by far the very best tyres you can get if my recent pothole experience is anything to go by, in which the police attended. They didn't even drop a bar of air pressure incredible 

I know what you mean thou, and you may have to give up the run flats if you won't excellent low noise levels

Of the OE options, Dunlops are by far the quietest.

Yes we have debated this topic many times. I'm not changing from run flats. I will need to reshoe this year and it looks like I will be going with the Hankooks. I note how expensive RF,s are.

So, after much deliberation, i decided to stay with the run flats and settled on a pair of Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 3 tyres to replace the worn out original Bridgestones on the front,  the original fitment rears are showing little signs of wanting to wear out, even at 30,000 miles. The Hankook’s are rated for noise at 67db, against the Bridgestones at 72, and they are certainly much quieter on the road, the only whines and rumbles are now definitely coming from the back, so all in all, for me, a much better choice. Car is due a minor service now, so more expence 😂

Thanks for posting ian. This is the type of tire i am going to get. Looking at all the other RF options they seem to be quiet on the db,s. A place ive had a couple of punctures repaired the fitter doesn't put any other tire on his own cars. So its reassuring you post you are happy with them.

I suggest , as others have, to stay with the same exact size the car came with. But I am not a run-flat fan. It stiffens the ride quite a bit and the car does come with a clever tyre repair/inflation kit that is good enough to get you to the closest shop. Of course it would have been nice if Lexus had designed the car to hide away a proper spare. Even my Mini Cooper (2005) has a spare tucked underneath the rear end.

My space saver is in the boot underneath the main load compartment. There is plenty of room for other accessories too. 

If you have the E4 model, there may not be enough room in this area for a spare wheel.
