I've noticed on occasion that if the CVT system has been whining away, when ascending a steep hill for example, that a burning smell can be present when exiting the car.

Is this normal?

Don't know about that smell but CVT does NOT contain anything "slipping" (like a DAF/Volvo 66 or 343), its all metal cogs in oil-bath ( look here from more in-depth info;

Went to Centreparcs last week and driving to the lodge there were some very steep hills and exactly the same thing happened to me. High pitched whinning from the CVT and a strange burning smell. No problems on the 200 miles there or on the return trip. just the steep hills.
