Rear trailing arm bush tool needed

Recommended Posts

Car has failed on rear trailing arm bushes the ones at the front now while I can get the bushes I am struggling to find the tool to remove them. I am loathed to pay Lexus £300 a side for new arms when the bush is £69, I know I can get the arms from the USA but with import and shipping they’re not much cheaper. Does anyone know where I can get a bush press for my car.

Thanks to Colin barber on here read a post he put on about us imports from rock auto. Didn’t realise shipping included duty, so bought both sides off there £195 all in. Should be here Friday.

When I asked my independent garage about replacing the bushes only they told me it wasn't possible as they are integral to the arms.  I am sure they did replace just the bushes on my old Saab or Toyota Surf (I cant remember which).

Reading much earlier posts on this Forum ……. Overall, replacement bushes require immense pressure to refit and are generally beyond the realm of most individuals and garages  to achieve …….. manufacturing has those specialist presses to achieve

Finding someone to do what you wish could be challenging

Good luck

Thanks to all that replied I managed to get two ordered from rock auto as I said as yes I was struggling to find a press for these but loads of YouTube vids for plenty of other cars and 4x4s. I have managed to get them out of the rear chassis on a Laguna before today so I wasn’t fazed but hopefully get the car passed when these arms turn up

Hiya Mick,

Wondered how you got on with this job, I'm now in the same position for all four bushings?

Many thanks,

Theo

Hi arms got changed over, the car now sits higher off the road and no more squeaking took an hour each side to change over. They cost £200 for both delivered including all duties and delivery.I got moog ones as they had good reviews

Thank you for the reply, can I ask where from and lastly did you do this yourself?

Just clarifying ……. you changed the whole piece  ?  You didn’t replace just the bushes ?

Rock auto,  moog rear trailing with fedex delivery, yes fitted myself, took some elbow to get bolts off but was easy enough

It's so important when ordering from Rock to choose FedEx economy, that way all duty is included, and as you probably discovered, they arrive within a week.

Yes as pressing the bushes out would need specialist equipment and for me it was easier to remove the arm and replace it and by the time you pay someone to change the bushes it was cheaper for me to change them

Hello Mick, how have you found the quality of the Moog items?

Had an 80k service done on my 2014 RX today and they picked up that the rear trailing arm bushes are in need of replacement. Got a quote from them to supply and fit new arms - £1,294.44!!!! Needless to say I am investigating alternative options....

Hi it went from constant noise on rear to a totally different vehicle, every bump in road made no noise and felt like a brand new car.they even raised the rear height as well, was told moog are well regarded in aftermarket kit

Thanks Mick, good to know they did the job for you. I have a bit of time to sort a cost-effective solution - it was picked up at a service, not at MoT time.

Told at Lexus dealer service last year my bushes were going to need replacing and was given a price circa £1500 so will be looking for less expensive alternative.  Have to establish whether my car having air suspension has same trailing arms as coil sprung models.

Is the Lexus Dealer just touting for imagined work needed ?
if there’s no MOT Advisory then I’d be wary of “ the need “

I think it is the same, but check somewhere like Lexus Parts Direct where you can obtain the part number.

I shall be taking it to my trusted independent for a second opinion, and it is rather more likely they will be doing the work even if I buy genuine Lexus parts.

I think a lot comes down to individual opinion of Technician.  My car has always [assed MOT's without advisories.  However, on the penultimate service at Lexus main Dealer,  they said the rear disks and pads needed replacing and they offered a price for doing it. I actually bought replacements intending to put them on (as I did the fronts a year previously). but due to my wife needing much more help these were not fitted.  I was therefore expecting this to be mentioned when they serviced my car last year but it wasn't, just that the trailing arm bushes needed replacing with an offer to do that @ circa £1500.  I will take a look myself when it stops raining and becomes a little warmer.  If they still seem reasonable and get through MOT, I will leave for another year.  Be interesting to learn what Lexus say at next service!

They’ll still possibly be touting for “ preventative maintenance “ work maybe long before it even becomes an MOT Advisory …… it’s probably in their Job Description / Targets 😰

Lexus replaced all four trailing arms on my Gen IV before selling it to me.  Their internal invoice priced the job at £2400.

What is the attraction of buying these parts from Rock Auto in US? Is it that they are cheaper that compatible components that are available at UK parts factors? Or is it that they are only available in the UK from Lexus dealers (at much higher prices)?

when I was buying suspension parts for my Ls400 from Amayama some years back they supplied product in Toyota stamped plastic bags  ........  and I saved several £'00s over the Lexus/Toyota parts prices from the Main Dealer network

I couldn’t get them in uk except Lexus at £335 each vs £200 for both delivered from USA in 5 days all duties and del paid. That’s the attraction cash plain and simple.
