Charging the hybrid battery

I’ve ordered an ES300h. How much coasting or braking does it take to charge the hybrid battery?

Don't bother giving it a thought. It sorts itself out. Mine is rarely 'fully charged', only after a long mountain descent. The system doesn't allow it get too low either, just diverts power generated by the engine to charge the Battery if needed.

One of those rare things that just 'works'.

Enjoy your purchase!

As above the Hybrid system will manage the charge status and not something to worry about.

When at the minimum charge (something like 20%) the engine will start (if not already running) and recovers to max normal (something like 80%) within a few miles of driving.  You'll only ever get to 100% after extended braking.

It's unfathomable, sometimes when it's nearly fully charged and you think it will decide to use Battery it uses engine. If you notice that it's using engine you can lift your foot off the accelerator slightly and it will revert to Battery for a while but then will do it's own thing again. One thing l have noticed, if it runs on Battery and engine at the same time it shows on the Lexus app under hybrid coaching as engine and not both.

With mine, I use the Cruise Control as much as possible and the car does what it can handle Battery or engine without playing with the accelerator. I average 37 miles to the gallon and get over 500 mile range.

more on this I am on IS 300H it also depends on the Battery heat.. if it is cold charge and recharge is slower.

If you are like me that my wife takes here time when shopping....... (if it is grocery I go also) then use your seat heater (that takes energy from the big battery) and reduse the heater temp or turn it off then if I got 3 bars then engine turns off like when buyn through a window (unhealthy food....). when the car is stationary the engine temp is what rules.. regarding the heater.

Yes I agree, the engine / Battery simply works well and does what it is designed to do.  Although I'm not particularly interested in or understand the 'under the bonnet' stuff, I do appreciate the end result.  I like to turn it on, select D and go.

The only thing I have kept an eye on is fuel.  We have had the ES for 3 months and have covered 5,000 miles.  For the first few tanks of fuel, I used BP E5 Premium petrol, since I had no idea what had been used before.  The car has averaged 59mpg which I was very pleased with - in all fairness, this is mostly motorway use at about 65mph.

However, now the colder weather has arrived, this has dropped to 55mpg but I think it's still very good for such a large car.

As far as I'm aware, the battery-engine magic simply carries on in the background - brilliant!
