All things being equal I should be looking at a 2006 XK next week. The guy restores Land-rover etc and is putting it up on a ramp for me to inspect. Regardless of whether I buy he is taking care of the advisories and doing a full underseal on it. It is a Aluminium body so hopeful there will be no corrosion in the arches and sills. Big thing for me is I ideally wanted British Racing Green of which there are not too many to be had at the price range I want.

Let you know how I go on.

Aluminium corrodes away like steel  ........  you rarely see a Rover 2000 etc these days ......  all aluminium bodies tyhen invented to save the ferric very very rust  🤣

To be clear I am not even sure I can follow through with this. The model has a whole gamut of potential issues that do not seem to plague the SC 430 to the same degree. Some of the paperwork I have trawled through looking at these is cautionary, off-putting, pick a word. If I go this route I will need a very high level of confidence to pull the trigger.

My XK had no issues with poss corrosion and it was a 2007 model as per the pic  and at no time was there any suggestion things were hiding the dreaded aluminium corrosion which does exist but I never experienced

In fairness, I have not come across much corrosion listed as advisory after they switched over to Aluminium. Some, but not much. Suspension related issues appears perhaps the most common.

I am almost too aware of my lack of mechanical nous so it's going to have to be persuasive. Indeed, I might suggest a mock mot from my local Indy Jag specialist and everything conditional on that outcome.

I think I had more confidence buying the 430. So , that door isn't closed, but there isn't much in the market to get excited about right now. That pale blue special from the SWest might have done it.

Got response from the seller on the Gold coloured XK above after I got very blunt and direct on what I expected. Turns out its had paint in the past and corrosion starting on the drivers side wing. So, Aluminium is not alway fault free, but nothing really is. Looking at pedigree of ownership seems to be the way to go to sidestep this stuff.

I was not aware Aluminum corroded until 2 weeks ago, my drivers wing mirror part made of aluminuim was chalky white!

Like the developers at British Leyland with the amazing rust avoided and proofed against  all Aluminium Rover 2000 ……. then they just corroded to “ white dust “ ……. Prettier than red brown rust of course but same effect …….possibly  very few Rovers of that construction about these days 🤔
