Hey.

When cruising at medium RPM, the engine suddenly died.  When trying to restart, it was obvious that there wasnt compression anymore.
The timing belt seemed alright, but unfortunately the borescope showed that all the exhaust valves hit the pistons. So engine's dead.

Before rebuilding or starting a new engine, what do  you think could have happen ?

  • VVTI / solenoid error that would have cause a bad timing for exhaust valves
  • Timing belt tensionner that gave up for a moment
  • Broken crankshaft key
  • Timing belt slipped

We are going to explore all of these possibilites, but I want to have you feedback on that since we don't want it to happen on the new engine!

Thanks a lot

How many miles on the engine before failure?

As you are rebuilding the engine everything will be as new so shouldn't be an issue for xxxx miles

Thanks for your quick reply.

It has more than 160 k miles.

Everything should be new, but I was scared that some sort of an ECU / electrical problem would have lead to bad cam timing and interference. But i don't think that this could be that bad.
