I'm currently looking for an interesting 'triple triple' (because I can't afford a 'double double'! I believe that you can contact the DVLA to ask if they would list a particular number provided it's not been previously issued. When they schedule it for auction they notify you via email.
I'm currently watching four on eBay & have found that in many cases if you add them to your watch list after a day or two you receive a notification that a discount is available. In my case they were between 6%-25% so well worth doing.
