After market tyre pressure sensors

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have the IS300h and will be fitting new alloys soon.  I was thinking of getting some aftermarket tyre pressure sensors to fit into the new alloys ready.  I have heard that it is difficult and some say impossible to get the car to recognise the new sensors without specialist equipment.  Can any please advise on tis.  If I bought a new aftermarket set, would I be able to get them recognised by the car myself.  If I would, would I still have the same problem if I bought Lexus branded sensors. I have minimal mechanical knowledge.  Thanks in advance.

Unlikely.  Aftermarket sensors will almost certainly have to be programmed to the car and that requires specialist equipment.

Are you also planning to fit the TPMS valves?  And then presumably you will take the wheels to a tyre shop to have the tyres fitted.

I suggest you will save yourself a lot of time and trouble by, first, locating a good tyre shop and choosing the tyres.  Then ask them about fitting and registering OEM valves - you should be able to negotiate a good all-in price.

It also makes them responsible for any problems!

Now I am confused!  I thought the TPMS valves was the sensor?

No confusion, Paul.  The valve is the sensor.  But as it states, this is an unbranded TPMS valve that “Requires diagnostic tool calibration.” - which I suspect is a tool you don’t have.

In which case you would need to take them to a good tyre retailer and see if they will fit and register valves supplied by you when the tyres are fitted and the wheels on the car.  I don’t know if they will on the basis that if they’re not Lexus branded - or supplied by them - they cannot be responsible for their operation!

In which case you will have bought a set of valves that no-one is prepared to fit and accept responsibility for.  So I suggest it’s better to have that discussion before buying anything off eBay.

But others may have different opinions!

All new TPMS sensors need to be re-programmed. Even if they are original lexus. You could do it yourself with a basic obd reader and software like carista. Else as others have suggested most big tyre shops should be able to program it for you.

You can get the original ones cheap on eBay. I remember seeing one shipped from Germany Almost same price as aftermarket ones and half the price that lexus want. Lexus use a unit by Pacific industries. This one should be very similar to the original as far as i am aware and with 2 years warranty https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/374691023930?hash=item573d534c3a:g:tUYAAOSwtYtkXOQl&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA8EPYMK9eSl2fTfqHOD6P1PurWIIxvG1chg%2FjDY3%2F2XIgFvbJ7X4o5JBwBhwuVZkiptjfP7kqmdpJK632%2FT3jzZ2WdftIhfEy2HV3kUmwLq6L4ClTev4DfVAW%2ByF5ZAtHbxbGv%2B2AzJS6MvHb89W4igPZVGb63pY4iD1R7a0aBBdWVO0HAqwHyRBFSxigpWxpK1LT7M4sKtCgPfrdmwfEWmuvP1puvwHQ9cklpoUvKufeCMd7%2FbIju1%2FyXYjXoVkNFqbl98a54gJduZ3hsbjB50aAKhucmMKI4k3qtb9dDNqapVYJJOlbm97s954%2BC9AlVg%3D%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR-CUg_eFYw

Also a valve and sensor are two separate things. Some tyre shops e.g Kwikfit will change your valves when you get new tyres but not the tpms sensor itself.
