I was looking at a second hand Lexus 2.0 E-CVT Euro 6 (s/s) 5dr, Premium Plus Pack Sunroof 2023 (23 reg) £31,220

The price seems very reasonable for a car that is 7 months 29 days old, BUT, when checking the price of the road fund license ..

'This vehicle has an additional tax surcharge of £390 until 28 Feb 2029'

So that means it's lost at least £8780 in 8 months! that's some depreciation. 🤑

Depreciation isn’t linear either.  The way I see it, I work hard and enjoy a luxury car so I’ll take the rest on the chin.

I did work hard, am now retired, so as I too enjoy a luxury car I am also mindful of the speed of depreciation.

Regards the cost of the road tax, we have just bought a 69 reg low miles Takumi for that very reason, the tax is ‘only’ £170, it was the only time the list price of that model was below the £40,000 threshold of the newer cars.

List price of UX250h Premium Plus with Sunroof is £41,410 (in solid red or solid black). Metallic paint adds £670, special £920.

So has lost about £10k from list. This is what always used to happen before the pandemic wrecked supply chains and delivery times became so extended that 'nearly new' cars ended up priced and valued the same as new (or higher!) as you didn't have a 9-18 month wait... Normality seems to be returning to used (and nearly new) car prices, thankfully!

In 2017, I purchased an Audi A4 - list price just over £40k, via a broker you could have got it new for £33k, at 9 months old I picked it up for £20,250(!!) from a main Audi dealer (and there were plenty of cars around at similar prices)...
