Hi people I’m looking for some advice on a new steering rack for my IsF, from Lexus uk it is £3600 for a new one and this also come in the is250 convertible, my question is I get that there are different part numbers to the racks but are they much different in the i250 and the is350 steering racks or will it just be the rods / ties that go on the end of the main part that bolts to the car. Any info will be much appreciated thanks Luke

Firstly, why do you need a new rack? Reason I ask is because there is a TSB.

It has been into my mates shop who is a mechanic and also to Lexus and both have come back with problem with the rack. It doesn’t do it every time you can drive it one day and it’s fine but then turn it off go into shop and it will be doing it consistently. It feels like the rack needs bleeding but it hasn’t been off the car nor fiddled with, it has had new fluid and a re bleed after this problem was about but same result, it is going to seem like a really weird description but it feels like the wind up touches with the flip out handle you use to get through the steering

If it's the issue where it feels like theres a notch when moving the wheel off centre at motorway speed or locks up/feels stiff after a long turn. It's either a new rack or new steering ECU to resolve it. There's a TSB for this state side. Sometimes a new steering ecu or refresh of it leads to resolve. From reading around on forums it's a funny issue that's never truly been pinpointed. Some have changed the ecu and it has fixed it, others have had the rack changed at Lexus which has fixed the issue

It is strange it will do it at all speeds even when stationary it doesn’t feel notchey it is both ways on the steering it doesn’t go heavy or anything it just feels like a electric motor turning with no power

Have you checked all the fuses ? Any lights on the dash ? Are the tyre pressures low ? Sometimes the basics get overlooked when investigating faults

No this is my only account I’ve had the car for 8+ years now so it is an old account. No lights on the dash, tires are all pumped up to the correct pressures as that was my first thought , 2 garages have both said rack as rare as it is so it looks like a rebuilt rack as there are magnets in it or something according to Lexus and they ware down over time ???. Well that’s what a contact in Lexus said anyway, the reason I haven’t put it into them they want it for 3 hours and it is £150 an hour 😳
