In the West we are too naive and continue to look at situations through our western eyes with our values. China has been undermining western economies for decades by undercutting all they supply heavily in price compared to our home production. And we all fall for it. Buy jeans for 9 euros, fake cartridges, cheap toys and so on. It is only now with the EV business that it gets more attention. In the same time we are witnessing european de industrialisation with companies de investing and moving production out of europe. Automotive, chemicals, steel the list is endless.  Remember China is subsidising all export they are fighting a war without guns.

I don't think we are naive so much as poor decision makers too often. For example, we can perceive the monetary benefit of buying product X from China for less money than it's Western alternative, but we cannot or do not take the process steps further to account for the costs to the West in losing productive jobs. You see the benefit is personal and tangible to a greater degree than the social costs via taxation to support people who have either lost jobs ,or been diverted in lower paying jobs. The latter is harder to identify and indeed less personal.

And what we do manufacture, and buy from, the businesses are possibly owned by Chinese / India / Saudi - Middle East conglomerates too ……. I don’t know this, I haven’t checked BUT I’ve been reading that Abu Dhabi is being prevented from owning the Telegraph group but I do know that State owns much else of UK corporates and significant businesses …. ExCel centre for instance

Indeed Qatar or Kuwait is it, owns Harrods   I’ll strike that off my place to do my weekly shop for sure 😅

You'll be telling me next that Fortnum&Masons isn’t independent …… oh where can I go to lunch these days 🤔

and The Ritz ……. Probably owned by the banks maybe !

But to live on the beauty of British soil brings much joy and pleasure

I’m not sure, Bernard, that we have all been too naive to understand what the Chinese have been doing these past few years.  What we and our governments have lacked and continue to lack is the ability to organize an effective and united competitive response.  To believe otherwise would be to accept, wrongly, that the Chinese are individually as well as collectively cleverer and more astute than we are.

Maybe the difference is that China has long term planning and interests and we do the 100 mtr sprint going from politician to politician

and NO this is not a request to abolish democracy!

And the Chinese have been around some 5000 years too maybe …….. they have a looooong perspective and very very loooooong term  aspirations

Bought a fancy new toilet seat today. One that lights up in the night!

Obviously made in China. Don't think there is a secret webcam attached.

I wonder if it is even possible to buy one made in the UK?

Well Malc there is a price to pay for democracy. Certainly when you don't need to get your party re elected every few years then you can plan long term without the ever present threat of being thrown out of power.

Booked in for the Covid jab this week. Not had Moderna before and I have to say it's left me 'leaden'. Hopefully it passes quickly.

If you can't figure out how to invade a foreign country to get elected then the next best thing is get shot and survive. Someone just did Donald a huge favour.

But not America …….., he survived !

just hearing there’s 3 guns for every citizen in the USA and you can buy bullets in the equivalent of bubblegum machines in the supermarket …… remember those 😅

I’m fedup with all these politics shows …….. now Christine Walkden on bbc2 just now, the wonderful gardening lady……. I’d vote her to be PM for sure, she easily empathises with nature and my simplicity in life 🤞

That's gun ridden America for you. I am glad he is OK and only his ear got shot off, but that's fine because he didn't use them much anyway.      Sorry Donald only kidding   get well soon.

Even if the gunman had rembered to put his glasses on and actually hit the target,I don't think he'd have done much damage as there isn't much between Trump's ears. That's all despite the fact he is permanently sprayed bright orange.

After events of recent days i was feeling a bit flat wondering exactly when did people just become so b...y discourteous and uncaring. Got me thinking I am glad to be this age so I don't have to up with a lifetime of this crap.

So, best thing to lift one, a bit of humour.
