Carbon fibre roof and rear spoiler - UV/sun damage?

Hi all,

Regarding the carbon fibre roof panel and rear spoiler fitted to the Black inspiration and sport plus (roof)...

Is there any experience of sun damage in the UK (usually raining I know) to these panels, or is there any recommended protection if left outside?

Thanks all

Some members on here have experienced delamination of some interior trim parts with there GS Fs' ...thankfully not myself ....haven't heard of any exterior issues on LC though.

Real carbon fibre should be thoroughly impregnated with clear epoxy resin. It shouldn't be affected. Of however a milky surface does develop it can be polished off with cutting compound. I believe Carbon Composites and their sister company Easy Composites sell a black cutting compound.

Ideally needs good protection like a ceramic coating to prevent any damage.

It's unlikely to happen anyway as it's fairly well protected by the clear coat

I would imagine that Lexus QC wouldn’t allow rubbish carbon fibre to get through.  A good ceramic coat is worthwhile for damage but also UV protection. Can apply yourself nowadays too!

From the LC500 handbook

■CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic)
part (if equipped)
●As the CFRP parts may change color if
they are exposed to ultraviolet rays for
extended periods of time, Lexus recommends
that your vehicle be stored in a
place where it will not be exposed to
direct sunlight.
●Do not use wax that contains abrasives.
●Do not use automatic car washes as they
may scratch the CFRP parts and damage
the paint.

I've not heard of any exterior CFRP issues across the RC F, GS F or LC. Certainly I didn't experience any colour changes on the external parts on my GS F, or if I did it was consistent across the piece so undetectable. Weirdly it's the interior pieces on the GS F that deteriorate - my guess is they aren't properly sealed at the edges of the trim pieces.

No problems here with carbon fibre roof, the car is not garaged, but has been ceramic coated from new.

I don't think the UK gets the same strong sun UV as some other countries who are reporting problems.

The rear spoiler on my GSF is delaminating. It was ceramic coated and well looked after.
I wouldn’t buy another Lexus with Carbon Trim anywhere for that reason.
