I think there is a fuse in the cabin labelled HEATER which would stop it, but other things such as the rear screen heater may also be linked to the fuse.

And in mine the added host of insect noises from the worn out HVAC gate makes me feel like I am in the amazon jungle

I had this happen many years ago on my Opel Monza.  I took it to a local auto electrical firm who replaced the faulty relay with one from a Ford cheaply and promptly.  Maybe you can do this yourself but otherwise check your local auto electrical firm if there is a reputable one near you.  I think it highly likely it is a faulty relay that is your problem.
