Faulty TPMS sensor?

Am I going nuts ( yes yes yes ) or do I remember times past someone saying to simply replace the Battery in the TPMS sensor itself ? 
 

memory sometimes fails me but it might help someone !

I remember watching a YT video of someone breaking open a TPMS valve to replace the battery….and there was nothing simple about it!

As I recall…once you managed to break open the valve, it revealed that the Battery itself was wired in and encased in a thick, white gunge- the purpose of which was to insulate the Battery and valve interior from road shocks and moisture..

Considering that you wouldn’t know if you’d been successful until you’d refitted the valve and tyre - at which point you might end up buying a replacement anyway - I suddenly remembered some drying paint that I had to go and watch!

But don’t let me put anyone off!

I’ve replace the batteries in all 4 sensors , no easy and the soldering of the batteries is rather tricky.

   Done the reset after fitting , all working again 👍🏻

Bob just thinking ……. might you have saved yourself £500+ by self changing those batteries successfully ?

I would think all that ..back in 2017 I let Lexus change one sensor at  £120.00 so guess prices would be considerably more now .

   I get great satisfaction fixing things myself .

i recently got 2 aftermarket sensors installed from a tyre shop in East London but the coding was a issue but they got it sorted eventually. not sure if east London is too far

Aren’t there “ shops “ repairers that have picked-up on the Battery replacement route scenario ? …….. like they fix cells in specialist car batteries whatever 

There’s got to be a “ new” business model for this repair shop surely …… with all cars after 2012 ( is it ) having TPMS and all with a limited lifespan

Did you gain access to the TPMS without any tyre changing equipment?

Lots of bad advise on YouTube on how to pop a tyre of the outer rim, i opted for a method using the cars scissor jack and a length of timber.

    The photo I showed above ,once popped of the outer rim a few blocks of wood to keep the tyre away from the sensor.

Side note…no garage is going to use this option as it’s time consuming and no guarantee it will work.

My plan B was just to go to Lexus 😮

I have a small compressor so no trouble refitting back on the rim, no balance needed as tyre as not changed its position on the rim .

Do new TPMS sensors come with all the washers and components in the below fixing kit, or do we need to buy this in addition?

What I can answer is I suspect a new sensor should come with the fitting kit.

I bought two of those kits for mine as the lock nut got damaged on the way off.….and new sensors are the guarantee it’s going to work first time …..I just like a challenge 😉

I haven't purchased these myself. But am pretty sure they come with everything. When i changed my tyres they included the valve in the price i.e if you're not changing your sensors the tyre shop will still replace the valve when fitting new tyres. So they definitely stock those and they are universal.

As far as part nos go. The 4 pack in the eBay link is the exact same part no as the one on Lexuspartsdirect. So i asusme its the correct one. Also imagery from the above eBay listing in this reply seems to match the 4 pack. Though its different from lexus parts direct. The sensors I bought from lexuspartsdirect were fitted with seals and valve stems just not with the washers and nuts. When I had the wheels refurbed I had new tpms fitted and should have got the the fitting kits as well because the nuts looked older, newer ones would have looked better.

Lexus Parts Direct (Fish Bros) (a dealership who run a part site of genuine parts for Lexus) can do these for £90 each - un programmed. But if you can drive to them, I'd imagine £90 per sensor plus them programming it will come in at nearly half what you've been quoted.  My Lexus dealer (Belfast in NI) also quoted £150 ish just for the parts each... sadly I can't drive to Lexus Parts Direct myself as I'm now having TPMS issues but it might save you some cash?  

They're a rare dealer that actually tries to be helpful / friendly and go hard on getting the best price. Rare thing indeed

I think the reason why its not a viable business is for 2 reasons.

1) These sensors are sealed and not meant to be re-used. While pople have been replacing batteries and re-using them. Given that they werent designed for this can potentially bring into question the long term efficacy of such a "repair" e.g using hot glue to re-seal it might not be as reliable as the factory weather proof filling thats used.

2) Labour costs in the UK are quite high. So even if i assume a rate of £60 an hour and it takes ~30 mins to remove the old one and solder in a new Battery...thats nearly half the price of what lexus charge for a new one anyway. And you can get a new one for ~£25 anyway from other sources.

This reply might be a bit late but you could check with Merit Tyre in Southfields. I haven't had TPMS done there but I've bought tyres in the past.
