Over revving

Good afternoon.

I have a 1990 GS300 with over revving problems. However, performance is OK and I can accelerate normally but revs on display are much higher than my actual speed. e.g.

40mph yields 2800 revs. which is clearly nonsense. Can't identify problem as no 'drop off'/hesitation with acceleration.

Any thoughts anybody?

Is the vehicle not changing up gear, or you just think the rev counter is not correct?

Thank you for replying so promptly. IIn all respects the car is accelerating beautifully through the gears but 2800 revs at 40mph? Don't think so.

So at a steady 40 mph do you think you are actually doing 2800 rpm or just the rev counter is wrong?

What happens at 70 mph?

Hello again,

At 40 mph I would expect 15 -1800 revs. As problem has recently occurred I haven't yet tried 70mph. However I will tomorrow as I'm making a Motorway trip
