I came back to the forum as I am having a RX itch as it's a couple of years now since I decided not to go down the RX route. I was almost certain in my mind that the RX was next, but having read this I am back to the drawing board.

Absolutely feel for you owners who have been loyal to a brand that was seamless in it's time, only now to be hit with the uncertainty and worry of the theft of your cars, plus the added cost of insurance.

As much as I like the shape of a RR, I would never take that route as they have a reliability reputation and recently worrying theft stats. I know Lexus will rarely be on the unreliability chart, however, the added cost of insurance and theft of this once fab vehicle is steering me to another manufacturer.

There are some attractive deals on the Gen5 RX350h/450h+ which are not affected by the canbus theft issues. I went from a NX450h+ to the RX450h+ expecting that running costs would be higher but amazingly the RX is proving to be more economical!

Gen 5 may not be affected by canbus issues ... yet but what have they skimped on this time and would I trust them, especially after how I feel they have poorly managed this issue.

Guess what? Another attempted theft of my RX last week! This is now 3 times in 18 months.

They tried the usual wheel arch access but obviously found the metal plate and decided not to continue. It did not stop them coming back a couple of minutes later to check again and must have decided they could not get through it.

I do have the Ghost II on the car so I am confident they could not actually drive it away but the damage is just annoying.

I am expecting them or others to come back and try again.

I think I will now be getting rid of my car and am trying to get a good deal out of my Lexus dealer for a Gen 5. I have somewhat lost confidence in Lexus but all other similar cars of interest seem to suffer from the same issue.

Let's see what happens and will keep you updated!

They will be back, they will remove the protection plate then find out they cant drive the vehicle away due to the aftermarket immobiliser.

I've seen several posts around the internet where the protection plates on RAV4 & RX havent stopped the vehicle being taken OR the thieves cause excessive damage removing them.

I ended up in the same spot as you Rob, gave up and bought a RX450h+ The APR is still showing as 1.9% on the lexus website. I did manage to get a discount (5%) but then I didn't haggle over the part ex price. The PHEV range I think has better pricing as I suspect Lexus want to shift some for the low emission credits.

I currently have few niggles with the car

  • Having to turn off the beeping from the road sign assist every trip (I'm getting better at it now)
  • Map is out dated, I do have the download for the update from Lexus (24GB) and I'll be installing it once I've done various longer Xmas roadtrips. There have been reports of folks ending up with bricked navigation units in the NX forum which is why I'm waiting until I don't need the car for a bit if it has to go back to the dealer. Also the car seems a bit keen on narrow lanes sometimes (although I haven't played enough with the route guidance options)

On the plus side fuel economy is great.
