Loud Screeching when under full power?!?

Recommended Posts

My car is driving fine, no warning lights, I can even accelerate pretty quickly no problems.  However, if I totally 'floor' it, - it suddenly produces a loud screeching sound and power is lost?  It's going into the garage tomorrow, however both they and myself have no idea what might be the problem?  Any ideas?

Could be so many things.  I think it's best to wait and see what the garage says once they've had a chance to check it out.

Please post up once you've heard back from them so we can continue to increase our collective knowledge or offer suggestions if the garage haven't worked it out.

Garage had a look and cannot find anything!  Unfortunately it was wet so when they "floored" it they couldnt recreate the problem.  So i'm off to pick up my car and pay them £50 labour!

Really not sure what I can do now, other than continue driving, and give it back to them when it's dry!?

Can you localise the screeching sound? Front, middle or rear of car?
Maybe get someone else to listen from the passenger seat as well as from outside as you drive past and floor it.

It could be water in transmission, open the allen key plug on bottom of gearbox sump and let a tiny bit of fluid out.spoonful.

is it nice red clear or thick hot chocolate. If water has got in from radiator intercooler( common fault on 430)

The water emulsifies the oil and it doesn't flow so good, maybe causing kickdown (hard acceleration) not to engage properly

Gulp, yes of course it might be that

James, what service or other records do you have of the radiator having been changed at say 10 years / 100k miles or whatever ?

The radiator was changed during the last service... - which was about 2 - 3 months ago....

I've left it with the garage to do back there when it's dry, and I'll demonstrate the issue to one of their mechanics.  I will definitely mention the water intake possibility

Are you sure you are not just spinning one of the back wheels?

When a wheel looses traction the stability control kicks in and cuts the power until it gets traction back.

When you are somewhere you can try it safely switch off the stability control and try flooring it. You may just need better tyres.
