While Land Rover models were the five most-recovered cars, according to its records for last year, it says hybrid vehicles are also becoming 'rich pickings' for criminals. 

The Lexus RX 450h entered Tracker's top ten most stolen and recovered league table, which is the first time a Lexus vehicle has ever appeared in its annual review of stolen and recovered vehicles. 

Keyless cars 'twice as likely to be stolen' 

A major insurer last year examined theft claims data and found that cars with keyless technology are twice as likely to be pinched as those without these features, and criminals are becoming increasingly brazen as more are ditching the cover of darkness to steal vehicles in broad daylight. 

Aviva said claims records held on its database for between August 2020 and August 2022 show that the number of cars stolen with keyless entry and keyless start systems were twice the volume of models without the tech.

A spokesperson told This is Money: 'Analysis of our claims data reveals that theft claims are twice as likely to occur for keyless vehicles than non-keyless models.'

'A sharp rise in thefts of the Lexus RX450h in the second half of the year indicates it's likely to remain a target for thieves,' it said."

What they don't say is what the ratio is of cars with keyless to cars without. Without that information, telling us that keyless cars are twice as likely to be stolen is meaningless.

Would this not suggest 33% of normal cars are stolen compared with 66% of “Smart” cars?

It's not just the keyless feature that is vulnerable. Apparently there is a way of getting into the CANBUS system via the passenger wheelwell, which then allows them to fool the car into thinking the key is present. Careless of Lexus!

It seems the only thing you can do is lock it away in a garage or use something like a Stoplock or Disklock, which can be defeated with some time, but makes the car a bit less attractive to the thieves.

I Find The Milenco Steering wheel Lock a good deterrent It looks good Extremely Tough Well Built and easy to put on the Wheel .Obviously it probably would not Deter a Professional Scumknut..If you havent got one Graham check it out..The Stoplock Pro also gets a good review but I like the look and feel of the Milenco...

Yes and then you need to normalise the data to what proportion of vehicles have smart keys, I would hazard a guess it's way less than 66%.
