I read that Toyota are to step back from the development of Hydrogen power and concentrate on electrical vehicles.................

A month ago, my LS went in to Lexus Den Haag to get a new ABS sensor fitted. Normally, they offer me the use of an ES300h but this time they asked me if I'd like to try a Toyota Mirai.  This their hydrogen fuel cell machine and I was impressed.

The Mirai is built on the LS500 platform and is, therefore, a big car. It is a hydrogen cell/electrical hybrid. If you didn't know that it was hydrogen powered you'd try to refuel at a normal garage. It performs just like any other hybrid but I must mention the drive train. I've never been a big fan of CVT but the Mirai is in a different league. It has the latest Toyota/Lexus CVT set-up and is really impressive; very smooth and direct. It reminded me of my nephew's Tesla.

As far as the planet is concerned, the Hydrogen/electric combination is the best of both worlds - keeping both internal combustion fans and tree-huggers happy 😄  I hope Toyota don't abandon the concept entirely.

The Mirai uses an electric motor so no e-cvt - it just uses a fuel cell to produce the electricity from the hydrogen to feed to the electric motor rather than in a BEV the electricity coming from a Battery pack. Hence it will feel much the same as a BEV to drive.

"The new CEO also said that while focusing on EVs is now the top priority, the company will continue to develop hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen-fueled powertrains."

So they're not giving up on hydrogen. They would be foolish to do so given that many other manufacturers are getting into the correct solution.

You live in a place where hydrogen fuel could soon be available.

Is the Mirai the gave you to use a test car?

Do not believe that Toyota is stopping hydrogen making progress with hydrogen cars. They are one of the companies having invested and now have cars ready for production only waiting for the fuel stations net to be ready to refuel the cars. No much fun having a car that cannot get fuel when needed.

When you are offered a hydrogen courtesy car, they must have somewhere to refuel it and that is all needed. Honda, Hyundai and Toyota have cars ready. GM and Mercedes believe that hydrogen will take big part in fuel in 2028, and some hope sooner.

GR Corolla equipped with a 1.6l 3-cylinder turbo hydrogen combustion engine.

Toyota converted an AE86 from gasoline to hydrogen and claim this hydrogen car only involved changing the “fuel injectors, fuel pipes, and spark plugs.”

The appeal of converting older vehicles into hydrogen cars to slash their carbon footprint.

Honda reveals a new CR-V for 2024. The car will have 2 H2 tanks installed so not  just an update of the CR-V.
