Hello all who this reaches I hope you’re having a great day.
I’ve got a 1996 LS400, (the 08/95-08/96 one) and low and behold the ECU failed.. bad. Capacitor leak and subsequent corrosion of course.
no company I have found will repair the corroded track as they all can’t guarantee for warranty. I’d give it a go but only if I knew it was the last resort and there was no other option.

Finding a second hand one with the correct part number (89661-50310,89661-50351) has so far eluded me. I’ve spent months trying to find one and sending it to various places to get fixed to no avail.

Could anyone point me in the correct direction of someone who will either fix trace corrosion or if anyone knows where I can acquire one of these used ECUs I would really appreciate it! Spent weeks calling around breakers and only so far found an immobilised unit from 08/96-11/96 (89661-50350).
My final resort would be to bite the bullet and order a new part from Amayama as my patience is beginning to run.
Much appreciated all!

Maybe put up a list of those places you have already tried . might jog someone's memory here to help you further

There aren't very many of us elderly Ls400 car owners about to quiz

Thankfully my ECU is still ok .  i just suffer from the age old " cuts out " syndrome that was ECU driven from new  and for which there was a recall in the USA but not here

Thanks for the reply!

I wasn’t sure if I could namedrop. I used a company called ECU testing, and a company called IER. Great customer service but unfortunately they couldn’t guarantee the fix with their warranty. ECU testing refused as they couldn’t link their testing machine.
if it was only the capacitors all would be okay, however the corrosion on the traces IER could not promise. They are not an ECU repair shop but a Specialist PCB repair company.
thanks Malc

Is asking someone on this forum if they have one spare for sale breaking the soliciting rules?

Ask away ...........  you might be lucky

past thoughts here were for a business called

Tamar Electronics          in Devon PL21 0BE

01752 894519    they have a website so check that out too

No idea of their credibility or usefulness ......  just a name cropped up here in times past .. I've never used them

Good luck

I have a 89661-50310 ECU from a 95 LS400, all working with no leaking capacitors or track damage. I swopped it for a 50351 ECU I bought off eBay mainly to see if it worked, which it did, and so I had a spare ECU. The car was written off a couple of years ago with the 50351 ECU in it and I now have a 98 LS400, I was looking for another mk3 but struggled to find a good one hence the 98 I have. See the post below about swopping the ECU etc. I may be persuaded to part with it😉, pm me and we can probably sort something out. And, I’m not that far away either in Darwen.

Having said that, I’d better double check it’s still there in the garage. Pretty sure it is though along with a mk1/2 ECU and a mk4 ECU as well.

Found it, after turning the garage upside down I remembered I’d stored it in a nice dry place in the house. I also have the new correct capacitors, the ECU is in pristine condition though and had only done 65k. I also have lots of other bits for the mk3, some brand new like distributor caps and ht leads and lots of used bits.

This is brilliant news!

I’ll also look into this company, it doesn’t hurt to have mine fixed also as a backup!

I’ll send you a pm. Thanks a lot!

Malc, did you replace the temp sensor for the EFI? part number 89422-20010

Paul hi

I've replaced nothing at all in this line of enquiry AND for some inexplicable reason and after 27 years and 243k miles, touch wood, she's behaving better now than in times past

It's good to know you're going to be the source of bits and bobs if and when I have the need and you're still holding these sacred parts safely ( for me maybe .....  hahahahahahahaha )

I shall pop up to see you Paul as you know I have a cousin in Kirkham that I need to see before we all get a tad older ...........  heaven knows when though eh !

It's a jolly long way from Queenborough in Kent

Best wishes

Malc
