I found "Night Mode" and I'm de-lighted

Apologies in advance to everyone who already knows about this.

My '99 LS400 has the original Navigation LCD display and a little while ago, in one of its sub menus, I found brightness settings, but there was also a mysterious "Night mode/Day Mode" button that didn't seem to work?

Well today I cracked it, if you turn on night mode and then use the instrument cluster dimmer/off switch, it turns the Nav screen background from bright white to a cool green colour that is easy on the eyes whilst driving at night. 

I could not be happier, I swear just when you think you have discovered all features, another one turns up!

Good find, I now wonder if my JDM LS430 has the same feature but having said that it took me 20 minutes to reset the clock after BST ended.

I must learn Japanese 😀

Thanks for the tip.

 

There are translation apps you can use on your phone that will translate using the camera image.  I've not used one but have heard of it.  I believe google have an app that does this.

It is a jolly nice feature, very useful last night coming down the M5 in the lashing rain, especially as I rarely do long distance night time driving these days. 

I recall it took me 4 years (and this forum) to discover all the hidden stuff on a Mk4.

I would say that modern satnavs are a lot easiert on the eye because they use LEDs rather than CFL to provide the backlighting to easier to adjust light levels.

On my 430 I keep the small on the instrument cluster on max but just before the click - this keeps the screen and the needles at a comfortable level day and night - I havent noticed if the screen changes colour or wether there is a dedicated day/night  mode

This feature is only available on the mark 4 upgrade in 99 previous mark 4 as not got it .

Well, I am now the proud owner of another '99 LS (from the UK not US this time) with Navigation system and I can report the screen colour is not bright white but a more muted colour and there is no night mode. Also it has fold up mirrors and headlamp washers which the other doesn't.

I have fold-up mirrors too  ..  by hand from outside  and headlamp washers .  ....a sponge and bucket for me, by hand ..  old school technology for me eh ! 😃

 

reminds me, all this searching for leaks ( on another post ? )  ........  my son-in-law has a phone/camera on a small drone that we are using up in the sky to try to track an interminable leak on my back roof of the house that only penetrates when there's a strong stormy southerly wind with rain .......  still can't track it down with first attempt by drone ....  and that's after the roofer guys tried to find the miscreant leak from both outside, up a sodding ladder, and from inside the loftspace ......  dastardly things these rain water penetrations eh !

Drones do have a domestic use outside of Russia warmongering it seems

Use a watering can over small areas of the roof.

Preferably on different days

Over just 1 square metre at a time

And use different colour dyes in the water each time!

Regarding the roof leak:

Are the valleys/gutters/drains clear? 

I've come across this situation where there was some rubble in a valley from under where the tiles had been pointed.  This didn't cause an issue in normal rain but if it was very windy, it would be enough for it to blow the water under the tiles and over the underlying membrane causing a leak inside.

going to get this drone up MORE close and personal next time .  a fine day, daylight, when the son-in-law can be around ...  that's challenging in itself 

Problem is rainwater penetration can run from heaven knows where along all sorts of rivulets on other parts of the very angled roof and slants and gulleys .  it's challenging for sure

But the roofs been there for nigh on 400 years ( not the same tiles though, but these are quite ancient anyway ) and there's absolutely zero indication of tiles being cracked nor split nor the gulleys being other than normal functioning gulleys 

We'll find it for sure  .  fingers xd
