Retrofitting Front Parking Sensors?

Good morning guys and girls,

 

Long story short, I bought a category s 250 (I know, I know, you get what you pay for), the structural damage was repaired, however they skimped out on some of the exterior bodywork. From what I've seen they replaced the front bumper with one without front parking sensors, now whenever I want to use my parking sensors the sonar system freaks out because only the rears will work - indicating the two front sensors aren't working because they're not even there.

Has anyone gone about retrofitting the front parking sensors? I've bought a new loom for the sensors as well as the sensors themselves, although they'll need painting before fitting. From what I've see under the bumper, the connector is still there for the parking sensor loom to plug into. What I'm concerned about is the fitment of the sensors themselves. Will it be as simple as just drilling out the hole in the bumper to fit them or will I need any particular tools/fittings for the sensors to seat comfortably?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I can attach some pictures if needed. Better yet if anyone has any pictures showing how they should be installed would be even better.

Hi Alex. The sensors are basically a push fit. Are there fitting instructions with the sensors you bought? Maybe have a look on YouTube for retro fitting parking sensors. That'll give you tons of info.

Thanks for sharing, I've had a look at a fair few videos on YouTube and have found them mostly pointing towards the rear sensors, from what I've seen, the rear sensors have a retainer to keep them held in place, I haven't seen anything like that for the front ones unfortunately... Might have to do a bit more digging to find out. If there was a diagram of the bumper with all the fittings I think it would benefit me a lot more

Hi Alex,

If you go to https://www.megazip.net/ and put your VIN number in you will get the parts diagrams which may be of help.

I had a quick look at the parts for my car ( 2009 IS convertible) and I see that there is a change of TPMS sensors for the later models - 2011 onwards. The later sensors do use a seperate retainer while those fitted to the earlier cars do not.

Just note that the diagrams for the TPMS system are seperate to those for the bumpers themselves.

From what I've seen, the parking sensors need some kind of bracket which I've managed to scout out second hand on eBay, but the hole itself for the send to sit in seem to be more of a square cut out instead of a circular cut out I was hoping for so it looks like I'll need a little bit of fiddling around to cut the hole to the right size

I had another look and you are correct in that the earlier type sensor also uses a retainer bracket.

Don't know how I missed it when I first had a quick look.

Just be aware that the two central rear sensors use a differant sensor and retainer to the other four on the car.

I have a is250 2006 year I would like to fit front sensors. Currently only have reverse camera. any one know if the wiring loom in the front bumper will have plugs to connect sensors?

I've just placed an order for the retainer brackets, as far as I can see they're basically the same as the rear ones, once they arrive I'll try and line things up and get them installed and I'll let you all know the process for anyone looking to undertake the job in the future

Hi Mike, if your car didn't come with sensors originally then I don't think the plugs will be in there, you may need to swap out the loom for one that does have the plugs for the sensors
