Ventilation AC - random questions

Hi, 

I'm trying to find out how the AC / ventilation works and if it has any hidden settings. The reason I'm asking this is because my previous car (Hyundai Ioniq) had a button for AC driver only to reduce the fuel consumption, and on the ES300h I noticed a few times when I start the car that the temperature adjustment is ON only on the drivers side (see picture attached), once the temperature is adjusted on the passenger side the display is back ON then it can't be switched OFF. Similar to Hyundai, but I can't find a button or setting for drivers side only. Also noticed that the ventilation is still ON on passenger side even if the temperature is not displayed in the dashboard. 

Is there a setting to use AC only on drivers side? 

Can the rear vents be turned OFF from any setting or just manually?

Any other tips and tricks known about the AC / ventilation system?

I know it should be straight forward using it, but just curious for things which the car might have, but not aware of. 

The AC is set on ECO when this happens.

Have a look at the screens, you have dual function turned off, this will only show the temperature on the drivers side. When Dual function is turned on it will show the temperature on the driver and passenger side. With this turned on the passenger can set a different temperature on their side.

On the one we have there is Eco, Normal and Sport setting. In Normal and Sport AC is working all the time, in Eco it is not working constantly and saving fuel.

Keep AC on all year. In summer to cool down and in winter to keep the car dry.

Now I thought that this was one of the things which I understood. Perhaps I was wrong. I can’t make a lot of sense re AC on the screen (not that I have really tried). However, I have noticed that the temp reading near the toggle does not light up on the LHS unless someone is sitting in the passenger seat. This is the same as the heated seats; the passenger seat does not get warm unless there is a bum on it. I just leave everything on “auto” settings. The car knows best!

Agreed on the S+, S, Normal and Eco settings. All are thermostated, but the power is reduced in Eco. This saves fuel but is slower to reduce Temperature. Pretty much how a fridge works. I have given up explaining to the other half that turning up the power on the fridge does not make it colder unless the motor is struggling to overcome the external temperature.

I am now ready to duck when somebody shoots me down.

The fuel consumption between AC on/off is minimal.

Better still, these cars have Climate Control, not just AC. Just set whatever cabin temperature you want, press the Auto button and the car will do the rest - the car really does know best.

As well as keeping the car cool in summer and dry in winter, having the AC on all the time means that as the refrigerant gas circulates in the system, so does the lubricating oil. This keeps the rubber seals in great condition rather than having them dry out, go brittle, and cause leaks.

On the second screen shot if you go into options you can then change S-Flow settings which controls rear ventilation. Auto should detect if people are in the rear and disable S-Flow, then enable it when no one is there. Otherwise you can manually enable it.

If you turn concierge on it will control heating and cooling from the vents and in the seats to suit the temperature you have selected, if the passenger temperature display is blank when nobody is sitting in the passenger seat it is already enabled. I think it’s brilliant, controlling the heating and cooling by detecting if someone is in the seat

Agreed the system works really well.

A question; is the AC driven mechanically (as in a “normal” car) or electrically? Seems to me it must be the latter as it doesn’t stop when the ICE does.

Definitely the latter and climate concierge works brilliantly automatically detecting passengers and disabling ventilation where it's not needed, making the system super efficient

Thanks everyone for the information, very useful! Also found out that the windscreen has de-icer function which is another bonus, especially now that... winter is coming!

Is the windscreen de-icer part of the concierge or does it need to be activated separately?

If it's fitted to your model it will be part of the climate control so should have a button option. It will only de-ice the screen directly beneath the parked wipers

It is only a wiper de-icer not a windscreen de-icer but it should stop you shredding the wiper rubbers providing you give it enough time to do it's job before switching the wipers on, something to bear in mind if you have the wipers on auto.
