Answer:

No, but it can!
If you carefully jam the button down (I put a bit of a cut drinking straw into the small gap around the edge to make it stiff enough to stay down) then the unit will auto power on as soon as the ignition is switched on.
You can even hide it away in the boot and it 'just works'!… see more

I put a small Lego brick on the on button and sellotaped it down so it was permanently pushing the button. Now comes on automatically with the ignition

Hi again Mick,
                        Yes, I had caught that post in my searches but not followed up on it because the device is quite large and I doubt that it would fit in the central storage so it would have to stick out in the middle of the back footwell using the rear 12V outlet at the back of the central console. Perhaps I'll send back the TP-link and try one of those though.

                Thank you very much for your post and for not giving up on me. I wrote two MacroDroid macros copying yours and this time they worked! Maybe sliding the ON/OFF slider to ON on the MacroDroid homepage may have helped! I got this message during the process:-

but I'm running EMUI 12 which is equivalent to Android 10 so it has less chance of being problematic.

We will see if Huawei rejects it at some later date but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

My apologies for not sorting this out when you first advised me about MacroDroid, Herbie, and again thank you very much for reiterating the information.

You mention an intention to buy a TP-Link M7350? Was this a joke? I'm intending to send mine back now that you have helped me get an automated system. I would have thought that 75 Gb of data is going to keep you going for a good few years yet. MY mobile contract is with EE where I get 10 GB a month, not able to be accumulated, for £11. I think that amount of data should be OK unless I want to watch movies on my phone, or on the Lexus come to that.

Right now back to domestic problems - how to fit a 1200 mm shower tray in a room that is only big enough for a 1100 mm one. I have a cunning plan.....

I'll let you know about both the Vline/Huawei phone and the shower tray as time progresses.
