It didn’t last long…

The lights came back (again predominantly the power steering light) so it’s back at Lexus and so far they’ve ordered a Spiral cable and Power Steering sensor which won’t arrive until Christmas!!  2nd hand car dealer who sold it to me is looking at a bill of about a thousand quid and Lexus Poole stress “this may not fix it” 😳

Is this the typical buying experience of the 4th gen LS ??  Has anyone else had to replace their Spiral cable or other Power steering components and what was the experience ?

I think your experiences " put to bed " our mere mortals dreams of ever sensibly owning a magnificent Ls600  ..........  and any Dealers dreams of ever wanting to sell one outside of a Lexus Warranty too

Good luck with all this  ....  hopefully the final £££££  tab won't drop into your lap to pick-up

Best wishes

One wonders if the previous owner had these issues and so decided to get rid of the car.

Buying an "older" Lexus can be gamble. I have bought 4 and been generally lucky. Buying from Lexus, with a warranty, is the safe but expensive option. Hope you manage to sort the issues.

If things do go wrong they can work out expensive but relatively cheap compared with the cost of a newer car. The big worry is NOT being able to fix the issue at all.

Just my thoughts.

Car has been with Lexus for 9 weeks and counting…

Delayed parts…

Diagnostic equipment outages across Toyota/Lexus…

Waiting for updated software from HQ…

No idea when I’ll see the car again, have notified the seller I bought it from (local car dealer) that intend to ask for a refund if between he and Lexus can’t resolve it.  I’m as patient as they come, but bought the car mid-October and had about 2 weeks use out of it!

My first and last time dealing with used car forecourts and their so-called hassle free warranties and definitely my first and last time using a main stealer network.  Awful experience.

Back to private sales and independent garages for me

The story ends…

Full refund from the local car dealer following complaints about the embarrassingly unresponsive and uncooperative service manager at Lexus Poole logging barely a few small labour hours in about 3 months of having the car.  I sensed a total lack of willingness to sort a 14 yr old car (despite its provenance 100% linked to this particular main dealer).  They dragged it out to the point I had to ask for a refund from the car seller who himself is £1500+ out of pocket with the car still unfixed and sat dirtying in the car park of Lexus Poole.  Legal battle between them looms and I’m grateful for being totally out the car having barely driven it a couple hundred miles at a cost of 4 months tax and insurance.

I might have tried another and sought out a specialised to look after it but once bitten twice shy.

Best of luck to other 4th Gen LS owners, bravest petrol heads around

such a shame you've had this challenging experience of what should have been a wonderful car to own and drive  .....  next one buy from a Main Dealer with a full warranty eh !

All cars can go wrong but more compicated vehicles with electronics make it a PITA if the fault can't be diagnosed. If I had the same experience, I would be running away George!

The bottom line is that you take the risk if buying private or through a dodgy independent warranty - which from reading others experiences, are not worth the paper they are written on.

Buying from a Lexus dealer with a full warranty is the safest but most expensive option. Very sorry to read this tale as the car seemed a good one. You did as much due diligence as you could but it turned out to be a lemon. Very pleased you got a full refund. Fully appreciate your feelings.

Dare I ask what other car you are now contemplating or have purchased?

Is this a sign of things to come for used cars?

I wouldn't take a New defender across the Sahara like I trust an old series 3 land rover.

At least you can fix most problems with a screwdriver, a spanner or a hammer !!!

I would start on this one by pulling ALL  low down positioned multi-plugs armed with a can of contact cleaner and a toothbrush ,especially those going into ECUs.

if still no fix a gallon of petrol and a box of matches…..

First purchase after buying a Lexus I would recommend an icarsoft obd reader.

plugs in under the dash, reads fault codes, lets you tell the garage what YOU want fixed.

Maybe the next purchase could be a Ls400 🤫
