Hello people!

I have an issue with my is220d, it’s an LHD car and has 260k km on the clock.
a couple of days ago, the nightmare begun, when for some reason, the engine start bottom doesn’t show any colors, it just stays with the backlight in and if I press it, nothing happens.

I tried looking the Battery, it’s ok. I looked all the ground, it’s ok. I looked all the fuses, they are ok.

I will be honest, the car is an ex flood damage, but the car worked perfectly until a couple of days ago. I bought the car really cheap but now I’m “balls deep” in it so I can’t just sell it because I will end in a huge loss, plus I really love the car so no reason for me to get rid of it.

Going back to the issue, I removed the module that should decode the key and make the car go brum brum, (89670-53030) since I saw that the same issue happened to other people as well, they had the code b2799 but I can’t scan the car because the dash won’t turn on.

anyway the only guy that fixed it said he heated it up with a hairdryer, I tried it, no work for me, I tried two different modules, no life at all.

so I’m asking y’all for some help.

anyone has ideas?

Hello Maciej and welcome to the LOC.

I found a similar topic linked below which may help but check the clutch switch first if a manual car and also try pressing the start button twice.

Hello Steve, the issue is a bit different, same to the two guys that had the b2799 code, if you look at the video, the ignition botton doesn’t have the amber light, I tried changing the switch with a spare one I had but no response, I tried two different modules but I don’t know if they require coding, I didn’t call my local Lexus dealer but I think I will and will ask that, I need to fix it asap because the car has an open window… 😅😂

Probably stupid suggestion but did you confirm the fob Battery itself is good, can you lock/unlock using the fob?

I know holding the key fob with dead Battery to ignition switch will work but in your video doesn't seem in close proximity to start button.

The key is good, the Battery is almost new, i can lock and unlock the car from 30 meters without hesitation. And I tried using both of the keys.

anyway, if I the key was low the car would say that the key is not detected and I would have to put it closer, but I did anyway, in the video I even how that the key is in my hand.

Best regards

First of all, does power button cycles at all i.e. OFF>ACC>IG-ON? What I am reading is that the car won't cycle at all (a.k.a it is dead). So it is long before B2799 issue, B2799 only means immobilisers communication issue, meaning your car will cycle, but will not start.

If you car is completely dead (which is what I am reading) then I would start from start button circuit itself. It won't be brake pedal circuit yet (as it would cycle without brake pedal depressed, but would say "depress the brake"), same for gear selector (would turn ACC on and say shift to N), same for key detection modules (would say "key not detected").

So power button itself, then power module (the picture you have of MPX - that is power module), perhaps worth looking at smart key module in the boot (but that is quite high-up so I doubt it would damaged in the flood), neither of the 3 requires programming, but they MUST bet matching part numbers.

I am assuming you already did basics like checking all the fuses, fusible links etc?

Doesn't this sound familiar?

Turned out it was the push start button itself, Maybe worth a try if you can source one.

*** For the suggestions about pressing brake pedal (only for Auto transmission i believe), is this not manual so it should be Clutch pedal instead (Irrelevant i suppose since there is no lights at all).

Yes Clutch pedal in case of Manual, my mistake. But I said as well that in my opinion it is start button or start button circuit.

I have a slight update on that, today I managed to get power to the car after I removed the immobilizer module, 89784-53011 is the code for it, it’s in a really akward location and I struggled to find it, I will send a pic tomorrow, mine was a bit corroded in the inside so I tried cleaning it but nothing changed, as soon as I plug it in the car starts acting up. In the next couple of days I will try to talk to my local Lexus dealer if I changing it with a different one needs to recode the car, I will move it in a different place later because it got corroded for some reason and I don’t want it to happen again.

the start botton couldn’t be because I changed it with different ones and nothing changed.

All I tried is thanks to a guy that made a post on this forum talking about the same module I’m having problems with. If you reading this post, let me just say I love you 💕 it helped me so much

Where is this module located, probably worth knowing incase someone runs into same issue if its not well insulated.

It is under the dash, sits against firewall. Kind of surprising it was corroded as it is basically at the window level (so the car must have been fully under the water).

Yes it needs to be recoded. The problem is not so much ID Code Box (immobiliser), the problem is the keys and steering lock. They have to match (be all from the same donor car), else you will have to get "virgin" keys and steering lock, which will be major cost. So basically 2x£600 for 2 keys (I assume you could use one), steering lock is like £700 but replacing it is horrible (need to drill out the bolts).

So my advise is to find matching ECU kit if you going through the trouble - I paid I think £140 for mine, 2xKeys, ID-box, smart key control module, steering lock. As long as they are all matching then only the Engine ECU needs to be reset, which can be done with paperclip.

Yeah I had to replace the steering once and I know it’s a huge pain but I tbh your prices are a bit off, you can get all the parts from Lithuania for really cheap, I will go to a guy that fixes circuit boards in the next couple of days and see if he can do something about that module, if not, the module is like 10 euro so I might try that one first, but I think the module is salvageable, the corrosion was just superficial and it might just be condensation because the car was sitting for some months.

it was not under water for sure, the water didn’t even touch the fuse boxes inside the car. The highest point was under the driver seat where it touched the motors corroding theme but I already replaced those and everything works flawlessly, at least it did haha.

I will update y’all as soon as I know something from that circuit repair man. He seems to be REALLY good so I have high hopes!!

No... you didn't get me. The price of individual modules is IRRELEVANT. Yes there are ID Code Boxes selling for £7.50, BECAUSE they are basically electronic waste, they MUST be a matching set or "virgin" (meaning brand new from Lexus, never used). I paid £140 for set of like 5 modules and 2 keys from the same car, because they are matching set and therefore only the ECU needs resetting. If you get the module which is not matching then just throw it to the bin, it can't even be coded to work with the rest of the modules... or maybe it can be coded by dealer, but you will pay way more than £140 to get dealer to reset the them to "virgin" and then code them properly, most dealers would not even do it.

I even told few of those Lithuanian sellers that they losing money by separating sets, because they are making them worthless. But the answer I got is that most of the time they buy breakers from auction and they have no keys, so at that point ID Box is trash anyway because single key is £450+cutting+programming... and they sell them for £10 Euro for spare components - basically if you have blown component on your ID Box and somebody can solder like capacitor or something, that is what they are for. Otherwise they are useless.

Well after some hard months, I did it, the car is back in the road, I couldn’t afford fixing it so I just let it sat there but now, it’s going great.
After I removed all the modules from the car, I took theme to a guy that fixes motherboard and similar stuff, he checked everything under the microscope and told me that the modules are in great shape and that I cleaned them every well so they have no hardware problems. After that I did go to a guy that specializes in keys and security, but he also codes car keys, so after a little chat and 400 euros, he reset all the modules and did code both the keys to the car, and my gosh it works better than when I bought it, not a single issue since there.

I waited a little before writing down to not give any info that might not work, but after around 300km of driving and a lot of turn on and off, it works perfectly fine, So there was no need to scrap the car 😂.

Now there are some issues that I’m becoming to know about the car that will need some minor fixing, but as of today, nothing severe, just the cracked dashboard and a thermostat that needs changing. With all of that I will do a complete maintenece, new brakes and after that, gotta take it on a roadtrip to get stranded a thousand kilometers from home haha.

That does makes sense... the little problem is knowing such guy who can do it! So consider yourself lucky...

When I had similar issue and called to like 20 places they all either said "we don't work on Lexus" or told me to take it to dealer, or told me they can't fix it. Finally... one guy came along took my ECU away for "programming" and never came back 😄

In the end I paid ~£280 for full set of matching ECUs, so all in all similar prices as you paid for codding them. IS220d ECUs probably would have been slightly cheaper than IS250.

Maciej thanks for the updates and good to read the car is now going fine.

If I get any ECU problems it may be worth a trip with Ryanair to Vilnius and do some sightseeing at the same time as getting things fixed 😀

Who is Maciej?

If this is the same person I am thinking of, then he did awesome work on my ECU tuning until my car had an issue with wrong fuel none related. That's the only reason I can't sell or scrap the car because it's a Beast of a car and only uses 5 litres of diesel per 100km.

I’m maciej, and no, I did not tue your car lmao, but I’m looking into getting my is220 remapped, drinks too much for the power in my opinion, going 50kmh I burn around 9.5 liters

Cool, nice to meet you Maciej. If you plan on getting 1st stage remap pm me and I will share the details for the other Maciej. I got mine remapped I think 280 euros.

Nice to meet you too! ☺️

i think there might be a slight logistic problem with me getting my car remapped by Maciej, because you most likely are in the UK, and I’m in Italy..

There is a small shop here in my city, they seem very good at doing cars, in know one of the guys that started the shop since he used to work in a Toyota dealership, so maybe they can map a Lexus too.. I don’t know, will have to look into it but not now, my life is in a very strange and bad moment now so I can’t really spend money now.😅

thank you anyway tho, I appreciate it ☺️

As far as I am aware the Lexus ECU are locked, the guy I used had to reverse engineer to unlock it. You just purchase a spare ECU (or send yours) and send it to him along with compensation codes for your injectors and once reprogrammed its plug and play.

I am miles away from him, you are probably closer to him 😂.

Yeah from what I know, Lexus works similar to Volvo on that (both use denso ecu and modules), and usually if you go to a tuner and you say you want to map a Volvo they will show you the door😂

but the same thing applies to what happened with my keys but I still managed to find someone that was willing to put the work and effort for it. As he said, he is not doing it for the money (still payed a lot looking at his prices) but for the experience and for the knowledge, as he said, you can do all the courses and update classes and look at people teaching all that stuff, but until you put hand on one of those, you can’t really know if you know how to do it.

So yeah this is something that can wait but I can’t stay more than a couple of days without the car, I still have my old Ford fiesta but is not running well, I think the fuel pump is saying it’s last words after 220.000km done, specially the last 60.000 where I drove it pretty hard and was enjoying the fantastic handling of the fiesta. Aaaah it was a great first car, will never sell it unless I’m at gunpoint haha.
