As you all know, there is a red button up in the roof liner of the car. What is it and who's connected if used. My dealer didn't explain too well, and I'm just assuming it's only in the event of an emergency like a car crash etc

That's the SOS call button. It's all detailed in your handbook.

Basically it will automatically call the eCall centre should an airbag deploy and transmit the vehicle location and details.

You can use it manually after opening the cover.

In the event of an emergency, press the
“SOS” button to call the eCall control
center.*
 The answering operator will
determine your vehicle’s location,
assess the situation, and dispatch the
necessary assistance required.

Yes, eCall is a system now mandatory for all new vehicles in the UK. It will connect you to emergency services, the same as dialling 999 or 112, but will also pass GPS location too.

Does it? Is the eCall control centre (as stated in the handbook)  the same as the 999 emergency centre?

Yes I believe so, or a central function that front ends all manufactures. There certainly isn't a control centre for Lexus and another for Ford, BMW etc. etc.
