Could be a dirty read head in the DVD. Cheap try out is to insert a CD/DVD cleaner disc and see if that help.

this is the read head for a DVD/BD reader - a CD reader will only have one grey eye. Just a little dust or dirt on the lens and it will not read well.

Dirty/scratched disc itself?

remove clock fascia and eject disc to inspect.

Yes, this is what I surmised. I'm not sure how to remove the clock fascia or to eject the disc. Is it covered in the owner's manual do you know?

And yes, the disc is in there all right, and has worked fine during my ownership of the car. So probably contamination of the laser head.

Yes it’s in manual and you use the two watchmaker looking screwdrivers in the spine of the toolkit in boot.

If the DVD is in place and the display is continuously showing the “Loading Map” message, simply depressing the Power on/off knob for a few seconds will immediately bring the map back.  This might also work with a “Map Missing” message.

Very helpful, thank you! It's actually the OE nav disc from ~2006 so useless for route finding. But it's a helpful cross-check when using Gmaps on the phone. Besides, it's there and it should work!

The nav DVD spontaneously came back, without any intervention by me. Curious. It has done this before too. Thank goodness I don't have to futz around with it!
