Guys

Can you let me know if you do shims and the fitting kits when you fit new pads and discs? I’ve never had a car where these are required and Lexus Parts Direct said they seldom sell them.. but they are listed as needed parts when you do these jobs.

Just clean the shims fitted to the old pads, thinly copper grease them and refit to the new pads.

Clean up the stainless steel pad retaining springs and the retaining pin.

Don’t forget the retaining pin R clips.

Interesting. I changed the front pads and discs and didn’t use shims (think they weren’t even there), or the replace the fixtures with a new fitting kit. But my brakes have started squeaking.

My rears need doing now so I was thinking of getting them, but it adds another £120 to the job! Won’t know until I strip it whether they’ve been kept by the previous owner.

It’s worth replacing the fitting kits but they are generally very hard wearing and if looking stressed or worn definitely.

They usually take a lot of mileage…and I’d always defer to steve2006. 😁

Did my brake service on Monday, there are actually 2 shims per pad so I fit them with just a light coating of copper grease between them after cleaning all the old stuff off.

The shim kits from Lexus are ridiculously priced for a few bits of shaped metal plate.

If you can wait Amayama have them for around half of Lexus UK prices although from Japan I would expect executive jet delivery at that price for shipping!

I bought my brake hardware kits from rockauto - when ordering pads you can get them with or without the hardware. I usually wait until I need a few things and get them all at once and prepay the fedex shipping while it looks more expensive it works out both cheaper and faster (as they pre customs check so her majesty can't rob you of over £20 for keeping your parts in a shed for a week) 2 days for delivery as opposed to nearly 2 weeks if I used the cheaper shipping.
