As stated. About 80 miles from home, this has happened. It had been a bodge job anyway and needed done.

just wondering if I’ll be ok driving it home without any serious mechanical backlash?

thanks in advance

Other than it sounding extra fruity you'll be OK!

Appreciated mate. Just wanted a second opinion given I’m not mechanically minded at all

I had the same thing happen to my mums IS250C, will need to take it to an exhaust specialist to get it welded back on. She did complain that the car felt a little sluggish but that could be a result of the exhaust coming off so try to get yours fixed when possible!

I wouldn't worry about the mechanical backlash but, decades ago when I was in my 20s, I was stopped by the police for having 'fruity sounding exhaust! Today, life is very different of course but I will refrain from any comments about our men and women in blue!

Shouldn't be a problem for the car and it isn't a legal issue, silencer is not part of emissions control and has no other purpose of just making the car more silent. In short I think it should be fine driving without it for some time. I had same issue myself and had to go to work twice before I could sort it out on weekend, so maybe total of 50 miles in 3 days.

I wouldn't be too sure, maybe not an emissions issue but a noise one:

It’s illegal to modify the exhaust system to make a vehicle noisier after it has been ‘type approved’ (checked it meets environmental and safety standards).

The police can also take action if your vehicle’s silencer doesn’t work in the way it was designed or if you’re driving in a way that creates too much noise

I doubt the police would take action if you explain it has just happened and you are recovering the vehicle though.

IS250 isn't really much louder without silencer, if you really rev it out then it just more dronny, but nowhere near the levels of noise to become an issue. Don't forget there are 2 catalysts and resonator in a way, and resonator is responsible for 80% of the noise reduction and both rear silencers for remain 20%. At least that is based on my experience running IS250 for two days without one silencer.

Remember going on holiday in around 2002 looking at property in Normandy, France in my 1986 Volvo 740 estate. While over there the downpipe decided to snap off to the front silencer and sounded like a motorbike! I enquired at a local garage and it was something crazy like 400euro! The car cost not much more. I wired it together as best as possible until could drive home and get it fixed.

I had to stop for a school crossing in Villedieu Les Poeles which the local gendarmerie on motorbikes were helping. I tried to drive as gently as possible but still loud and popping but they never pulled me over.

Got back to the UK and bought a Bosal Downpipe for ÂŁ25 and around same for fitting.

As yours is gone on rear should be fine, just open windows if smell fumes.

Home safe lads thanks for the input.

had been long overdue to get the exhaust sorted so going to see about getting a stainless made up.

The part that's snapped off is just the end 'pretty' part yes? It has no bearing whatsoever on noise or emissions. Its o ly the chrome tail piece and a very short bit of zorst pipe. Keep driving it until you sort a replacement out.

Isn't there a back box on each side right at the back of the exhaust?

Looking at the picture it seems like entire side from Y joint has broken-off, but I agree that it makes little difference for noise and it does not affect the emissions.

 Yes there certainly is.

Looking at pictures, bodge job doesn't cover it  ! No silencer .? That's going to cost a pretty penny .😞

I found it annoyingly louder with no back boxes, but then it will sound pretty weird with one on and one snapped off 😂

Meh, £240 on eBay for some OE replacement : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/112521866538

Seems a bolt if well made so DIY fitting!

Yep, but sure he wanted stainless ! Not a simple bolt on , will need ramp + welding + probably hangers + he states " not mechanically minded " . Good luck 🤞

Well worth it and a ton for a garage to fit still worth it.

Be advised though that this will not actually fit IN a IS250, so if it gets delivered to your home address you somehow gotta get it to exhaust shop!
