If the RCF transmission works like the ISF transmission then you don't need to shift to "M" for that, the flappy paddles still work in "D" it's just you don't have to use them like you do in "M".  I.E if you're going for an overtake and want to drop a few gears you can use the down paddle to drop to your selected gear then afterwards either up paddle back or just hold the revs and the car will resume control of gear selection after a few seconds.

Ah yes the manual calls that "shift ranges" or something. Not a true M mode, but you're telling the trans not to go above a certain gear. I use it for engine braking when going downhill, but never think to use it for overtakes, I think I just prefer manual in those cases as it's simpler and won't kick me out of the mode at an inopportune moment etc.

Btw, to get out of that mode you can also hold down the "up" paddle for 2 sec.

I use the downshift paddle in any mode for overtaking and hold the up shift paddle for a few seconds if I want to return it to auto.  I change the drive modes to suit the driving style I want depending on the circumstances & how aggressive I want the car to react.
