About 30-35 years ago, and they certainly worked inside a car (a BMW325 in my case) albeit not promptly enough in the described circumstances.  Haven’t had any since so can’t comment on improvements, if any.

Try looking at Hoya En-route 👍

Those photochromic sunglasses were and are totally not for driving with. The night time glasses I thought I still have have been lost somehow but I remember them being absolutely Brilliant along the Snake Pass and over Woodhead pass at 3am in Autumn and Winter. They made the road look so much clearer and in the snow? wow. I'll have to get another pair as I've changed jobs and now start at 2am to drive to bonny Scotland with a 2nd driver.

How long ago was this?

Photochromatic lenses do not work when inside a car due the UV being cut out by most car glass.

I have a pair of prescription sun glasses for that very reason.

I have photochromic prescription glasses that darken within the car, bought 2yrs ago. They are also reactive to visible light, not just UV. They work very well 😎

because the key difference is that you only put glasses on when you need them, if at any point it becomes too dark you take them of, whereas tinted windscreen is permanent.

That makes perfect sense Linas. I suspect it's aimed those types who insist on wearing sunglasses at night, indoors 😉

Yeah it's stupid how I see some folk wearing sunglasses in all kinds of weather …

When I think about possible rain-free scenarios where I might be tempted to wear a pair, a convertible Ferrari springs to mind, but a convertible LC500 would also fit the bill ….
