heaven knnows why one would want to put a sensible car thru' tests like that !

I see no Elk/Moose in that video. That's just a collision avoidance swerve test.
Elk crash testing is common in countries that have a lot of them like USA, Canada & Scandinavia and involves actually hitting a fake Elk to see how well the car and occupants survive.
I've seen an XJ6 after it hit an Elk at 50Mph and how the driver survived is a miracle as the whole front of the roof was at bonnet level.
This is a proper Elk test on a V70 Volvo. Most cars do pretty badly at this test but for once taller cars do better. If yer gonna hit a Moose, do it in an SUV.

When out in USA, had a colleague who survived Elk crash while in the company Porsche - a reward for being top sales of the month.  I assume being a Porsche low enough to only have roof ripped off not crushed.

What I learnt is that Elk (and Moose) stand in the road because the tunnel effect of the road in a forest means more of a wind, the wind is disliked by midges, so a bit like midge control (especially at night).

Nothing like a 2 ton creature on the car to re-arrange the roofline
