Hi guys, I drive a 2001 GS300 and yesterday I turned the car on, all of a sudden a cloud of smoke poured from behind dash on passenger side. With a horrible smell of burning plastic.

My stereo turns on but I have no sound at all.

There's a blown fuse in the engine bay, which I tried to replace but blew instantly.

I pulled the glove box and the whole  centre console but there's no evidence of any wires that have contacted or tripped.

I also pulled the passenger door card to check for dodgy wiring but found nothing.

Is this a common problem or can anyone think of what it could be, apologies for the long read but I'm very stuck.

Thankyou.

I doubt it's a "common" problem but unfortunately, once the magic smoke has been released, it usually means a lot of expense.

I'd say the reason why you can't see any evidence of short circuits/contacts is because the damage is within the stereo/radio/head unit. You need to take that out and take the case off to look for blown and damaged parts on the circuit board(s) and/or soot.

Thanks for the reply mate, I do have an aftermarket stereo I was going to put in but didn't bother as my current factory stereo doesn't work.

I'll give that a try.
