EV Range after 4 years

Having seen my Outlander 2018 EV range drop by about 25% after 4 years ( my 2015 one was also the same after 3yrs)  is anyone else concerned or conscious that this will inevitably also happen to the NX450h... I am a company car driver so it doesn't concern me as will change again in 3/4 years but it would be a consideration if I was buying for sure...

PCP gives the risk back to Lexus Finance, or looking at it another way gives flexibility to make a decision armed with the facts in 3 years time.

I didn't suffer that level of degradation with my 2018 Mitsi, probably 10% in 3 years?

I don't know how good the BMS on the Outlander is, but at least the Lexus has a basic active, and liquid based, cooling system to avoid the batteries overheating - which is one source of degradation. The system should also actively managed low capacity to avoid damage that way.

Lexus provides a warranty for three years if the Battery goes below 80%. What isn't clear is whether the 80% figure carries over to the 8 year hybrid Battery warranty/10 year Relax warranty or it just covers a complete failure.

Yes i was surprised also with the level.. Ny first one I fast charged maybe 5 or 6 times a week so was kinda expecting the Battery to get trashed, but my 2nd one is always slow charged overnight, and now im about 7/8 miles down from new... Strange one...

Very strange - I know there was a recall for MY2019 cars for some software updates. Probably the same one that makes them easier to steal!!

Waiting for my 450h+ to be delivered I was short-term leasing a Volvo XC40 Electric and the handbook suggested that only charging to 80% on a regular basis was the best way of preserving that Battery!!

It's all sorcery and witchcraft 🤣

One thing I have noticed that is different is the way the regeneration works with the flappy paddles.

With the Mitsi you can go to zero, so no rolling resistance, whereas D is the lowest setting and there is still some brake regen taking place -probably it's the standard Lexus Hybrid tech taking over?

Normal Lithium Ion batteries do not like to be stored at 100%. It causes degradation so if you can conveniently get away with only going to 80% it will help considerably in limiting Battery ageing, saving 100% charges for the times when you really need the extra range. That's easier to do on a full BEV where you have much more range, whereas on a low range PHEV that 20% loss may be too much depending on your commute - in that case you could delay charging so it is at 100% as you need to leave for work, not putting it on charge as you get home and it sitting at 100% overnight.

Thanks for the tip @ColinBarber My usual commute is 7 miles each way, so I can do 80% easily. It's now remembering to unplug it earlier 🤣

I would have thought optimum Battery life charging cycle would be built into the system by design. Just because it's plugged in doesn't mean it's charging? If an 80% charge maintains the design range for more years the system would do it automatically

Yes, I'm pretty sure you can tell it when to charge via the app... So get home and plug it in, but set it so that it charges in the early hours and hits 100% just before you need to leave...

Surely it would never be 100% charged or you wouldn't have capacity spare for harvesting from regenerative braking?

Well as soon as you drive away it isn't 100% anymore so you can always add something back in, but depending on the vehicle, regeneration braking may not be enabled or on reduced capacity when the Battery is fully charged.
