Every year my car fails the M.O.T. because of two holes in the mid section exhaust, where it splits off to the back silencers. And every year I 'just' manage to tape or bandage them up to get the car through.

However, this year I wanted to be 100% sure so I did that old trick of blocking one of the tailpipes up and having a vacuum cleaner on blow up the the other and then testing with a spray bottle with soapy water to check for bubbles where it may be leaking.

Having passed my little test I took it off for the M.O.T. where it failed on the exhaust again. Apparently my little test wasn't good enough, so my question is this. Exactly how does the garage perform such a test and how can I do that at home to be sure it's gas tight before I waste more money at the garage?

Also, if anyone has or can point me to where I can get the mid section exhaust for a MKI 91-97 Lexus GS300 2JZ-GE (piccy below) I'd be eternally grateful

I think they just feel for blows with the engine running.

Why not see if an exhaust fabrication place can make up and fit a replacement section? I can recommend JP Exhausts if you're anywhere near Congleton - others are available!

Thanks.  I think that's probably the key, with the engine running 🙂
