Can anyone explain this please? I'm used to using a wedge seat cushion in previous cars, although not nearly as necessary in the ES. When I use it and have the heated seats on, the lumber heater works but the seat base heater doesn't, yet as soon as I remove the cushion the base heaters work. I hope I'm not doing something that might damage the heaters like restricting air flow or something. The only thing I can think of is that my weight distribution on any pressure pads maybe different when sitting on a wedge cushion. I'm referring to the drivers seat.

You are almost certainly correct that it is the weight distribution on the seat base. The seats have pressure sensors so that they can detect the presence of the driver/passenger and act accordingly.

I use a wedge cushion to and have noticed the same , however you can get around the problem by putting a firm board under your cushion to distribute your weight over the pressure sensors. Just be sure the the firm board you  try doesn’t damage the leather of the seat. You could try firm cardboard
